DESCRIPTION:The Community Conversations Green Valley series from Arizona Public Media continues with host James Reel of KUAT classical 90.5 FM radio\, live for an informal talk and featuring chamber music performances by University of Arizona graduate students. Light refreshments will be served.  James Reel is the classical music director and morning announcer for KUAT classical radio. He's also an arts editor for the Tucson Weekly and contributing editor to Strings magazine. He served as the arts and entertainment editor for the Arizona Daily Star from 1995-1999 and frequently gives pre-performance talks for organizations such as the Arizona Friends of Chamber Music and Arizona Opera. Reel is also the author of \"The Timid Soul's Guide to Classical Music.\"  Performances scheduled include the Arizona Graduate Winds\, the UA's premier student chamber ensemble\, and a selection of pieces performed by UA graduate piano and cello students called \"Beethoven Cello Sonatas.\"

SUMMARY:Outdoor Volunteer Event at Sabino Canyon
DESCRIPTION:Sabino Canyon\, in the Coronado National Forest\, is one of Tucson's most popular outdoor recreation sites. Giant Reed\, or Arundo\, is an invasive plant that invades riparian channels\, where it competes with native species such as cottonwoods and willows\, as it has done in Sabino Creek.We need your help on the first Sunday of each month to remove the plants\, which entails cutting\, bundling and hauling the stalks.Volunteers are advised to bring water and to wear sturdy shoes or boots\, a long-sleeved shirt and pants\, a hat\, sunglasses or safety glasses. Tools and gloves will be provided. Parking for volunteers is free. Volunteer windshield parking passes can be obtained at the registration table.

SUMMARY:Science Cafe\: \"The World Without Photonics\"
DESCRIPTION:Flandrau\: The UA Science Center is holding its next \"Science Café.\" A science café is a casual forum for people to meet and discuss a particular science topic with a University of Arizona scientist in the relaxed atmosphere of a local restaurant.  Robert A. Norwood\, professor in the College of Optical Sciences\, and Roland Himmelhuber\, a graduate student\,  will give a short talk titled \"The World Without Photonics.\" Their presentation will focus on how modern technology such as DVD players\, wireless devices and internet communication rely on the manipulation of light (i.e. photonics) although from a user's vantage point no light is ever seen. Norwood is a world expert in polymer integrated optics and optical materials\, with 50 refereed publications and 26 issued U.S. patents. As a professor in the College of Optical Sciences\, Norwood performs research on high speed electro-optic modulators\, integrated magneto-optic devices\, 3-D display technology\, nanoimprinting\, organic photovoltaics\, plasmonic infrared emitters\, photonic crystal techniques and devices\, and ultrafast optical switching among other areas.  Admission is free. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Seating is limited so please arrive early. Seating is on a first come\, first serve basis.
