SUMMARY:Science Cafe\: Past\, Present\, and Prospective Pandemics
DESCRIPTION:University of Arizona Science\: Flandrau is holding its next \"Science Café.\" A Science Café is a casual forum for people to meet and discuss a particular science topic with a UA scientist in the relaxed atmosphere of a local restaurant. This Tuesday's science café will be with Michael Worobey\, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology\, and he will discuss the \"Past\, Present\, and Prospective Pandemics.\" Worobey uses an evolutionary approach to understand the origins\, emergence and control of pathogens\, in particular RNA viruses and retroviruses such as HIV and influenza virus. He will give a brief overview of when\, where and how the HIV/AIDS pandemic got started and emerged worldwide\, and how those insights might help combat HIV/AIDS going forward. He will also talk about the emergence of the 2009 H1N1 pandemic flu virus. In 2009\, Worobey received Simon Fraser University's Sterling Prize in Support of Controversy for his groundbreaking work on the origins of HIV. His 2007 findings\, published in Nature and the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences\, drew criticism at the time from some in the scientific community\, the media and the public\, but have now been widely accepted. Worobey also co-authored a paper in 2009 that found that transmission of the H1N1 virus to humans occurred several months before recognition of the outbreak. Shipherd Reed will moderate the discussion. Reed\, who promises to wrap things up by 7\:30 p.m.\, will keep the discussion lively and on track.
