DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Third Biennial Research Frontiers in Nutritional Sciences Conference. This is a high-impact learning and networking event for basic scientists\, applied scientists\, epidemiologists\, clinicians in practice (public health practitioners\, medical doctors\, registered dietitians\, doctors of osteopathy\, pharmacists and nurses) as well as post docs and graduate students in training. This conference is a multidisciplinary\, translational research meeting that brings together scientists and clinicians to develop collaborative solutions and research agendas for combating cancer\, obesity and diabetes. SUMMARY:Phenology Research and Observations of Southwest Ecosystems Symposium
DESCRIPTION:    An invitation and call for papers ...  This meeting is free and open to all persons\: Please call this meeting to the attention of your colleagues\, students and friends.  The USA National Phenology Network\, or USA-NPN\, and the southwest region of the American Society for Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing  present a symposium on \"Phenology Research and Observations of Southwest Ecosystems\,\" or PROSE.   The keynote speaker is Abraham Miller-Rushing of the USA-NPN\, who will speak on \"Henry David Thoreau's Contribution to Climate Change Science\: How Climate Change is Restructuring Ecological Communities.\"  Among his many eccentric activities\, Thoreau kept meticulous records of flowering and other phenological events. Miller-Rushing will describe how he and his colleagues have used Thoreau's records to provide novel insights into rapid\, climate-driven changes in plant and animal populations.  Register for the free conference and submit abstracts online    Please note that abstracts - 300 words\, including title\, keywords\, authors and their affiliation - must be submitted online by Sept. 10.

SUMMARY:Tinker Symposium on Graduate Field Research in Latin America
DESCRIPTION:With grant money from the Tinker Foundation\, the University of Arizona funded more than 25 graduate students from seven departments across campus to conduct original research in Latin America this past summer. The University and Tucson communities are invited to come and listen to students' research experiences and outcomes. Graduate students will discuss their field experiences in 11 countries\, from Mexico to Argentina. This year's research topics span multiple disciplines and address issues such as politics and the environment\, immigration and identity\, and development and public health. Student presentations will begin\, following a brief introduction\, at 8\:30 a.m. A complete listing of student topics and presentations is available on the Center for Latin American Studies Web site. This year's keynote speaker is Kevin Healy\, an adjunct professor of international affairs at George Washington University and a grant officer at the Inter-American Foundation. Healy is the author of two books and multiple book chapters\, covering topics such as indigenous movements and development in Bolivia and the drug industry in the Andes. His talk\, titled \"Popular Participation and Rural Development\: Comparative Perspectives on Recent Experiences in Bolivia and Colombia\,\" will begin at 4\:30 p.m.  A free reception will follow\, which the public is welcome to attend.The Tinker Symposium is organized by the UA Center for Latin American Studies. The Tinker Foundation was created in 1959 with the focus on providing funding for research possibilities in Latin America\, Spain and Portugal. Additional funding is provided by the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences\, College of Humanities\, College of Public Health\, the Vice President for Research\, International Affairs and the Center for Latin American Studies.
