SUMMARY:Accommodating Nature\: The Photographs of Frank Gohlke
DESCRIPTION: Frank Gohlke\, one of America's leading landscape photographers\, is professor in the photography division at The University of Arizona School of Art. For more than 30 years\, he has taken photographs that depict how Americans build their lives within a natural world that rarely matches the pastoral ideal. Whether photographing vast spaces of the Midwest punctuated by grain elevators\, the close confines of the Sudbury River in Massachusetts\, or the aftermath of the 1980 volcanic eruption of Washington's Mount St. Helens\, Gohlke draws attention to the boundaries between humanity and nature.

SUMMARY:Jenny Schmid\: The Vistas of Gender Utopia
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona Museum of Art presents \"Jenny Schmid\: The Vistas of Gender Utopia\,\" an exhibition marking this exciting emerging printmaker's first comprehensive solo museum presentation and monograph publication. Schmid will offer a lecture on her work on Sept. 18 at 4 p.m. and a book signing and opening reception will follow from 5 p.m.-6\:30 p.m.Schmid's \"Gender Utopia\" project explores notions of gender and liberty through images that fuse Old Master print precedents with a hip contemporary sensibility. Critical yet humorous\, Schmid's work is luxuriantly colored\, exquisitely wrought\, and iconographically rich. Her prints quote from Europe's Medieval and Renaissance print precedents\, the medium's traditions of social satire and arch political caricature (including Breugel\, Hogarth\, Goya and Daumier)\, contemporary journalism and sociology\, feminist scholarship\, graphic novels and various strains of popular culture - visual\, musical and literary. Densely packed with symbols and language\, the work traces the distant past to the immediate present with a wry humor that carries the sharp poke of contemporary critique.

SUMMARY:\"Being Perceived\"
DESCRIPTION:Scott Ellegood creates portraits of emotion and memory\, rendering what is hidden beneath a surface visually apparent. We perceive others based on historical\, cultural and social establishments\, but often miss who the person is or how they exist. Reactively\, we mask ourselves for these same reasons.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Naked Eye\: Science Reveals Nature's Art
DESCRIPTION:Art and science have always been connected - from alchemist experiments producing art materials to Renaissance explorations of anatomy - and artists still draw on scientific technology as inspiration and in process. This exhibition aims to reverse the traditional roles by presenting the science as the art by looking beyond what is accessible to the unaided human eye. The images in this exhibition are taken at scales varying from satellite imagery at the upper end to electron micrographs of objects only a few nanometers in size\, and include biological structures\, geological features\, and the materials produced by prehistoric and historic technologies.  This exhibition is mounted with financial assistance from the National Science Foundation/University of Arizona Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program in archaeological science.

SUMMARY:On L'Amour\: Contemporary Photography from the Stephane Danssen Collection
DESCRIPTION:Love - l'amour - is one of art's enduring themes. From classical antiquity to contemporary America\, this profound idea\, both abstract and physical\, has inspired collections as well as creators. Stéphane Janssen\, Belgian by birth and resident of Arizona\, is one such collector.  Beginning with a love of art that emerged in his teenage years\, Janssen went on to assemble an extensive and entirely unique collection that includes almost every creative medium\: painting\, ceramics\, photography and more. For this exhibition\, Janssen generously shares a group of contemporary photographs that reflect his vision as a patron.  Sharing elements of fantasy and physicality\, exuberance and emotion\, these photographs - by artists such as Philip Lorca diCorcia\, Sally Mann\, Duane Michals\, Vik Muniz and Spencer Tunick\, among others - depict love in myriad forms and guises. The Center for Creative Photography is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
