SUMMARY:Spheres\: Exhibition of Visiting Artists' Work By Yozo Takada and Huang Zhiling
DESCRIPTION:Culture\, environment and region affect our internalized view of humanity. In the Spheres exhibit\, Yozo Takada and Huang Zhiling\, visiting artists from Japan and China\, confront the relationship between person and place from opposite sides of the spectrum. Inspired by their surroundings and drawing from their backgrounds\, these artists depict human interplay within our global environment.Yozo Takada \"aims to consider our life and world from an objective point of view\" through photographing artificial environments that alter earthly landscapes\, but simultaneously support an abundance of biodiversity.Huang Zhiling internalizes Tibet's Buddhist society in China by exploring the belief of parisuddha. Stripped of detail and exactness\, Huang seeks to outwardly reflect the inner purity essential to the Tibetan Buddhist way of life. Region\, religion\, spirituality and environment remain untranslatable. Similarly\, his characters are uncorrupted\, free to live a life of introspection in an unflawed world. There will be a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 5.

SUMMARY:Nick Georgiou\: Life-Death-Resurrection Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona Union Gallery presents Nick Georgiou\: Life-Death-Resurrection. New York sculptor and filmmaker Nick Georgiou will be at the UA as a visiting artist this spring. Georgiou has exhibited work in Soho and London\, has been featured by the Wooster Collective\, and was commissioned by the Oxford University Press to create a permanent\, large-scale paper installation in its Manhattan office. His sculptures regenerate natural source material\, infusing it with layers of literal and metaphorical meaning in a style that is distinctively his own. Each paper sculpture is hand-carved and textured so as to encourage interaction with the viewer. As our culture steadily moves away from paper and the printed word\, Georgiou rescues the \"relic\" of the 21st century\: the printed word.Concerned with issues of recycling\, sustainability and evolving forms of modern communication\, Georgiou will be creating new\, site-specific work here in Tucson. The gallery will be transformed into a living set for his creatures to exist and interact with visitors. A series of workshops\, lectures and classroom visits are planned for the month of April.
