DESCRIPTION:Qualified faculty from The University of Arizona and its affiliates are encouraged to apply for cancer research funds made available through an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant and the Arizona Cancer Center Support Grant. These funds are intended to provide seed money to new investigators to help them with starting their research programs and to obtain preliminary data in support of more extensive proposals. Only applications that relate to cancer research will be accepted. DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the University of Arizona classics department organizes a wonderful spring break tour of Italy - an antipasto of the country! This year the sites include Venice\, Florence\, San Gimignano\, Rome\, Pompeii and Capri. Our group is between 35 and 45 members of the UA community\: graduates\, undergraduates\, staff\, professors\, spouses and their friends and family. The trip is congenial\, academic\, and thrilling! SUMMARY:Ives/Copland and the American Spirit Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the second annual 20th-21st century composers festival\, \"Ives/Copland and the American Spirit Music Festival.\" The festival will include four concerts and an introductory symposium\, providing a rich panorama of the music of these two progenitors of American music. The entire School of Music will be engaged\, with performances including the Arizona Symphony Orchestra\, UA Wind Ensemble\, Arizona Choir\, Arizona Contemporary Ensemble\, and faculty from the wind\, string\, voice and piano areas.The featured guest artist will be pianist Jonathan Shames. Shames\, a student of Leon Fleischer and Theodore Lettvin\, won a finalist diploma in the 1982 Moscow International Tchaikovsky Competition. Symposium speakers will include Vivian Perlis\, director of Yale University's Oral Music History Project and biographer of Copland\, and Jan Swafford\, who has written the definitive biography of Ives. We look forward to seeing you at all of the festival events!Performaces are at 1\:30 p.m.\, 4 p.m. and 7\:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 and 1\:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Oct. 18.

The FWC was initiated as a social club promoting friendship among the wives of faculty members.
