SUMMARY:36th Annual President's Concert
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, the best talents of the University of Arizona School of Music will perform in this year's President's Concert\, held on Feb. 7 at 7\:30 p.m. and Feb. 8 at 3 p.m. The concert will feature the Arizona Symphony Orchestra and student soloists who won the highly competitive President's Concert Competition.Featured in this 36th annual President's Concert are the competition winners\, violist Amber Reed\, pianist Rouzbeh Tebyanian\, bass baritone Seth Kershisnik and flutist Tori Hauk. These students were selected from the string\, wind/brass/percussion\, vocal and keyboard areas of the School of Music. They represent the depth of talent at the school\, shining in two performances with the Arizona Symphony Orchestra.Following past years' tradition\, Arizona Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor Thomas Cockrell will share the podium with graduate student conductors. This year\, the orchestra welcomes the two inaugural fellows of the James E. Rogers Institute for Orchestral and Opera Conducting\, which was recently established at the UA School of Music. The young conductors are Keitaro Harada and Jackson Warren.

SUMMARY:Comedy Corner Sketch and Improv Shows
DESCRIPTION:Comedy Corner\, The University of Arizona's sketch and improvosational comedy troupe\, has been performing its own brand of comedy on campus since 1979. But\, watcher beware\, the shows are not for the easily offended and contain adult content. The show consists of prewritten\, rehearsed scenes and improvised games\, in which the cast literally makes something out of nothing but an audience suggestion\, with hilarious results. Comedy Corner performs free shows at the Cellar Bistro every Friday at noon and every Wednesday night at 9\:30.

DESCRIPTION:Prize-winning pianist John Milbauer will perform his annual Faculty Artist Series recital.Mixing the familiar with the unfamiliar\, the exasperating with the enchanting\, this concert aims both to provoke and to delight the listener. Milbauer's eclectic program will include Ludwig van Beethoven's last composition for piano\, a selection of Frederic Chopin mazurkas\, Claude Debussy's seldom-heard \"Images Oubliees\,\" and the five pieces \"Out of Doors\" by Bela Bartok. Also featured will be a recent work by French electro-acoustic composer Pierre Jodlowski that makes extreme demands on performer and audience alike.

SUMMARY:Tyva Kyzy (Daughters of Tuva)\, a Female Vocal Ensemble from Central Asia
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona School of Music presents Tyva Kyzy\, a female vocal ensemble from central Asia.The first all-female throat-singing ensemble\, Tyva Kyzy - pronounced T'vah K'zeh and meaning Daughters of Tuva - formed in 1998 under the direction of the famed Tuvan throat singer Choduraa Tumat. The five members of the ensemble perform a wide range of overtone and throat singing styles including\: khoomei\, a three-note mid-range style\; sygyt\, which features a high-pitched overtone\; kargyraa\, a low-pitched rumbling style\; ezenggileer\, a pulsing elaborated style\; and chylandyk\, or grasshopper style singing. They also perform on a variety of folk instruments from central Asia such as the doshpuluur\, a long-necked lute played like a banjo\; igil\, a two-stringed fiddle\; byzaanchy\, a bowed viol with a sound said to resemble the voice of the cow\; khomus\, a jaw harp\; chadagan\, a hammered dulcimer\; and various percussion instruments.
