SUMMARY:2011 Engineers Without Borders-USA Mountain Region Training Workshop
DESCRIPTION: The University of Arizona student chapter of Engineers Without Borders will host EWB's 2011 Mountain Region Training Workshop. Engineers Without Borders-USA\, known as EWB-USA\, works with local communities to support sustainable engineering projects that provide roads\, clean water and renewable energy to developing countries. The UA student chapter\, EWB-UA\, hopes to attract 150 undergraduate students\, graduate students\, faculty\, and professionals from many disciplines to Tucson for a weekend of technical and cultural training\, hands-on workshops\, networking and inspiration to design and implement their own sustainable engineering projects. The workshop is open to all. Many projects focus on water resources and related areas in which UA researchers are pre-eminent. Michael Campana\, president of the American Water Resources Association and a UA alumnus\, will deliver a talk at the workshop titled \"Rural Groundwater Development and Capacity Building in a Developing Country.\" Wendell Ela\, a professor in the UA chemical and environmental engineering department\, will speak on water quality testing and lead a hands-on workshop. Other UA faculty\, local professionals and experts\, and EWB-USA staff will also give presentations\, lead hands-on workshops\, and facilitate discussions on topics ranging from rainwater harvesting\, to sanitation\, to concrete construction\, to the cultural and ethical considerations for sustainable international development. In recent years\, EWB-UA student members have worked on projects in Mali and Ghana in West Africa to bring clean water to thousands of people in dozens of villages. The UA chapter is also investigating the possibility of doing relief work in Haiti and setting up water-treatment projects in Bolivia and Mexico. The UA student chapter was recognized in 2010 when EWB-USA named it a premier chapter for its work building a strong chapter and successfully completing projects.

SUMMARY:Tech Tuesday\: Maximizing Your Digital Defense and Computer Performance
DESCRIPTION:In today's fast-paced world of academic and business computing\, computer performance and digital maliciousness can seriously impact our studies\, daily work\, productivity and even profitability. But computer vendors rarely provide free advice about how to keep your computer running smoothly by implementing preventative measures and safe computer use habits. In the November installment of UA BookStores' Tech Tuesdays\, Performance Specialist Michael Geary touches on a few easily implemented security measures and safe practices to help keep you and your computer safe and your academic and work objectives on track.

SUMMARY:Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lucy M. Ziurys\, professor in the UA department of Astronomy and Chemistry\, presents \"Organics\, Minerals\, and Isotopes\: A Radio Astronomical View of Pre-Solar History.\"Understanding the connection between the interstellar gas and the pre-solar nebula is crucial in understanding solar system formation and the origin of life. Important ingredients in this regard are both organic and inorganic materials\, while isotopic composition provides insight into stellar origins and galactic chemical evolution. Using the telescopes of the Arizona Radio Observatory\, we have been examining the organic inventory in molecular clouds and the origin of organic chemistry. Molecular line observations have been conducted which trace the history of carbon in stellar nucleosynthesis\, its ejection into the interstellar medium\, and its subsequent incorporation into dense molecular clouds. A similar study is being conducted to trace metal-containing compounds and their cycling through interstellar gas. New observations have also been carried out to further constrain circumstellar and interstellar isotopic ratios\, including 14N/15N. These observational studies are supported by a laboratory high-resolution spectroscopy program utilizing millimeter/sub-mm direct absorption and Fourier transform microwave techniques. Results of these studies will be presented\, and their implications for astrobiology.

SUMMARY:2011 Edmund A. Arbas Memorial Lecture - \"Analysis and Synthesis of Odor Source Localization in the Silkmoth\"
DESCRIPTION:Ryohei Kanzaki\, professor for the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Tokyo in Japan\, will give a talk titled\, \"Analysis and Synthesis of Odor Source Localization in the Silkmoth.\" Adaptability\, the capability to behave properly in a ceaselessly changing environment\, is essential for the survival and success of animals. We will investigate the neural basis of adaptive behavior\, focusing on orientation toward and location of an odor source by a male silkmoth\, at several levels from genes and single nerve cells to the behavior of the animal. In seeking to understand the neural basis of the behavior\, we made a model of the neural circuit and integrated it in a mobile robot. Moreover\, in order to understand the dynamics of the neural circuit\, we have been developing an \"insect-robot hybrid system\" in which the insect or an insect brain controls a robot. Kanzaki will introduce odor-source location in the male silkmoth and its neural basis. Then he will show the extent of adaptation in the behavioral strategy\, as governed by the neural system and investigated via implementation in a robot. Finally\, he will demonstrate the insect-robot hybrid system and an example of genetic manipulation of the insect behavior.

SUMMARY:\"Write me up\, PLEASE\: Documenting Performance Conversations and Disciplinary Actions\" Workshop
DESCRIPTION:By the time it's time to write up an employee\, there is generally tension and ill will\, but that does not have to be the case. When managers use positive language that describes aspirations for the future\, employees are encouraged to believe that productive change is possible and can begin to accept personal responsibility for their actions. When the need for change is not realized\, a past practice of positive documentation will make disciplinary actions less subject to legal challenges. Please register online at the address below.
