SUMMARY:Beyond the Naked Eye\: Science Reveals Nature's Art
DESCRIPTION:Art and science have always been connected - from alchemist experiments producing art materials to Renaissance explorations of anatomy - and artists still draw on scientific technology as inspiration and in process. This exhibition aims to reverse the traditional roles by presenting the science as the art by looking beyond what is accessible to the unaided human eye. The images in this exhibition are taken at scales varying from satellite imagery at the upper end to electron micrographs of objects only a few nanometers in size\, and include biological structures\, geological features\, and the materials produced by prehistoric and historic technologies.  This exhibition is mounted with financial assistance from the National Science Foundation/University of Arizona Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship Program in archaeological science.

SUMMARY:On L'Amour\: Contemporary Photography from the Stephane Danssen Collection
DESCRIPTION:Love - l'amour - is one of art's enduring themes. From classical antiquity to contemporary America\, this profound idea\, both abstract and physical\, has inspired collections as well as creators. Stéphane Janssen\, Belgian by birth and resident of Arizona\, is one such collector.  Beginning with a love of art that emerged in his teenage years\, Janssen went on to assemble an extensive and entirely unique collection that includes almost every creative medium\: painting\, ceramics\, photography and more. For this exhibition\, Janssen generously shares a group of contemporary photographs that reflect his vision as a patron.  Sharing elements of fantasy and physicality\, exuberance and emotion\, these photographs - by artists such as Philip Lorca diCorcia\, Sally Mann\, Duane Michals\, Vik Muniz and Spencer Tunick\, among others - depict love in myriad forms and guises. The Center for Creative Photography is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

SUMMARY:Steward Observatory Mirror Lab Tour
DESCRIPTION:This tour will provide visitors with a behind the scenes look at how we manufacture the world's largest mirrors to produce the sharpest images for giant telescopes. These mirrors are used in mountaintop observatories to explore the edges of the universe\, to study planetary systems in formation\, and to seek out near earth asteroids that may someday pose a threat to life on Earth. We show how the spinning furnace melts glass in structured molds to make lightweight mirrors\, which have more easily controlled internal temperatures. In a second laboratory\, technicians use the grinding and polishing instruments to shape mirror surfaces to a fraction of a millionth of an inch. Renown for its honeycomb mirrors\, the lab also is building on its expertise to work on solar electricity generation.

SUMMARY:Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Professor Caitlin Griffith of the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory will discuss \"Investigations of Titan's Methane Cycle.\"On Titan\, methane exists as a gas\, liquid and solid\, and cycles between the atmosphere and surface. Similar to Earth's hydrological cycle\, Titan sports clouds\, rain and lakes. Yet\, Titan's cycle differs dramatically from its terrestrial counterpart\, and reveals the workings of weather in an atmosphere that is 10 times thicker than Earth's atmosphere\, two orders of magnitude less illuminated\, and that involves a different condensable. Cassini/Huygens measurements of Titan's troposphere\, where the methane cycle plays out\, are limited to spectral images of Titan's clouds\, several temperature profiles and one vertical profile of Titan's methane abundance\, measured on a summer afternoon in Titan's tropical atmosphere. Griffith will discuss thermodynamic and radiative transfer analyses of these data sets along with recent ground-based Keck spectra. These observations\, albeit few\, suggest that Titan's weather\, climate and surface-to-atmosphere exchange of volatiles differs from the manifestation of these processes on Earth\, largely as a result of different basic characteristics of these planetary bodies. The talk ends with a comparison of Titan's and Earth's tropospheres\, their fundamental properties and the energetics of their condensable cycles.

SUMMARY:Visiting Artist and Scholar Lecture - Mary Jane Jacob\: \"In the Space of Art\"
DESCRIPTION:The School of Art Visiting Artist and Scholar Series presents Mary Jane Jacob\, professor and executive director of exhibitions at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. One of the most nonconformist U.S. curators of the last 20 years\, Jacob has critically engaged the discourse around art in public spaces with such innovative exhibitions as \"Places with a Past\,\" Charleston (1991)\; \"Culture in Action\,\" Chicago (1993)\; \"Conversation in the Castle\,\" Atlanta (1996)\; and \"Evoking History\,\" Charleston (2001-present). Jacob's lecture will draw upon her own practice as a curator\; creating spaces and situations for art to be made and experienced in cities and communities\, as well as in galleries. Importantly\, she will ground her remarks in the work of artists who cross cultures\, some following the Buddha\, others reaching points of wisdom along other paths\, and all of which move beyond national or ethnic identity to speak on universal terms. It will include the work of Marina Abramovic\, Ann Hamilton\, Alfredo Jaar\, Kimsooja\, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba\, Rirkrit Tiravanija\, and Bill Viola.

SUMMARY:Architecture Lecture\: Margaret Griffin of Griffin Enright Architects\, Los Angeles
DESCRIPTION:Margaret Griffin\, founding partner of the Los Angeles-based firm Griffin Enright Architects\, established in 2000\, will speak on campus. Griffin Enright Architects' practice fuses interests in innovation and experimentation with a desire to explore cultural complexities relative to the built environment. Its versatile practice includes projects ranging from large-scale commercial and residential commissions to furniture design and gallery installations. The work moves beyond the traditional scope of architectural practice\, underscoring connections with the surrounding urban fabric and landscape by reinforcing existing conditions or creating new ones that allow architecture\, urban context and landscape to be experienced in new ways. Griffin Enright's comprehensive approach to design depends on the simultaneous blurring and exploitation of distinctions between inside/outside\, built form/landscape\, site/urban context and theory/practice. The firm is the recipient of numerous awards for design excellence including\, most recently\, the 2006 American Architecture Award from the Chicago Athenaeum.

SUMMARY:Symposium on Social Science and War
DESCRIPTION:War has given rise to both employment opportunities and ethical debates within the social sciences for at least a century. U.S. operations in Iraq and  Afghanistan currently rely upon diverse social science human resources and techniques\, ranging from embedded ethnography\, historical and psychological analyses\, mapping\, linguistics and demographical statistics. Presently\, the U.S. Defense Department not only integrates these methodologies into counterinsurgent field strategies abroad\, but also influences the funding\, and in turn the research priorities\, of an increasing number of social science units in America's universities. As students preparing for careers in these disciplines\, it is important to explore the challenges\, opportunities and ethics of scholarly engagement with the military and national security agencies. This symposium is meant to provide information on the history\, contemporary context and implications of being social scientists during wartime in the United States. It is intended to provide a platform for various arguments to be made on this topic\, and to encourage students and faculty to consider their own position drawing from the breadth of expert commentary that will be presented by this multidisciplinary panel. David Price (St. Martin's University) and Kelly Moore (University of Cincinnati and a UA alumna) join four UA scholars to discuss.

DESCRIPTION:\"Jesus\, The Misunderstood Jew\" Jesus of Nazareth followed the Torah of Moses\, found inspiration in the prophets of Israel and offered a teaching that some Jewish men and women found compelling.
