SUMMARY:On L'Amour\: Contemporary Photography from the Stephane Danssen Collection
DESCRIPTION:Love - l'amour - is one of art's enduring themes. From classical antiquity to contemporary America\, this profound idea\, both abstract and physical\, has inspired collections as well as creators. Stéphane Janssen\, Belgian by birth and resident of Arizona\, is one such collector.  Beginning with a love of art that emerged in his teenage years\, Janssen went on to assemble an extensive and entirely unique collection that includes almost every creative medium\: painting\, ceramics\, photography and more. For this exhibition\, Janssen generously shares a group of contemporary photographs that reflect his vision as a patron.  Sharing elements of fantasy and physicality\, exuberance and emotion\, these photographs - by artists such as Philip Lorca diCorcia\, Sally Mann\, Duane Michals\, Vik Muniz and Spencer Tunick\, among others - depict love in myriad forms and guises. The Center for Creative Photography is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

SUMMARY:Gallery Opening\: Exhibiting Identities - Images from the Growth of African American Student Affairs
DESCRIPTION:In the spring of 1989\, a group of students and a multicultural group of faculty and staff participated in a peaceful but strong demonstration on the campus of The University of Arizona. Demanding more programming designed to fit the multiple needs of the black community on campus\, this group convinced the University to create the African American Resource Center. This center eventually found a home at the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center and is now known as African American Student Affairs. AASA has served thousands of students representing multiple identities over the past decades. This exhibit highlights images over the 20-year journey of AASA\, capturing the many identities that are part of AASA's history.

SUMMARY:Spheres\: Exhibition of Visiting Artists' Work By Yozo Takada and Huang Zhiling
DESCRIPTION:Culture\, environment and region affect our internalized view of humanity. In the Spheres exhibit\, Yozo Takada and Huang Zhiling\, visiting artists from Japan and China\, confront the relationship between person and place from opposite sides of the spectrum. Inspired by their surroundings and drawing from their backgrounds\, these artists depict human interplay within our global environment.Yozo Takada \"aims to consider our life and world from an objective point of view\" through photographing artificial environments that alter earthly landscapes\, but simultaneously support an abundance of biodiversity.Huang Zhiling internalizes Tibet's Buddhist society in China by exploring the belief of parisuddha. Stripped of detail and exactness\, Huang seeks to outwardly reflect the inner purity essential to the Tibetan Buddhist way of life. Region\, religion\, spirituality and environment remain untranslatable. Similarly\, his characters are uncorrupted\, free to live a life of introspection in an unflawed world. There will be a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. March 5.

SUMMARY:Free Telescope Viewing at Flandrau\: Venus and Saturn
DESCRIPTION: Brilliant Venus\, the brightest star-like object in the sky\, is now near peak altitude and brilliance above the western horizon\, and its crescent phase appears increasingly larger and thinner.     Also\, the ringed planet Saturn rises earlier and creeps higher above the eastern horizon. SUMMARY:College of Science NEXT\: Science that Transforms
DESCRIPTION: In the near future\, several large-scale research projects under way in astronomy\, physics\, biology\, cybernetics and medicine have the potential to reshape our understanding of the universe and ourselves. Join The University of Arizona College of Science as we provide a firsthand look into the workings of these far-reaching research programs and the diverse outcomes they may offer. Six scientists will intimately describe their explorations into deep space\, particle physics\, evolutionary biology\, artificial intelligence and the hidden workings of the human brain. Their insights and observations will provide a front-row seat to the epic scientific discoveries that the world may be making next.March 3 NEXT\: Visualizing Human ThoughtElena Plante\, professor and head of speech\, language and hearing sciencesThe ability of the human brain to think and communicate one's thoughts is fundamental to our experience. For centuries\, our ability to understand how human thought is represented and communicated had to be inferred from observing behavior following brain damage. The recent advent of new tools for noninvasive study of the normal brain has revolutionized our understanding of brain function\, allowing us for the first time to visualize human thought. And we are only just beginning.

SUMMARY:Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Professor Roger Yelle is the scheduled speaker.Observations by instruments on the Cassini mission have drastically altered our understanding of chemistry in Titan's organic-rich atmosphere. Synthesis of complex organic molecules occurs at much higher altitudes (lower pressure) and proceeds to much larger molecules than previously thought. Tholins\, Titan's pervasive aerosols\, appear to be synthesized primarily in the ionosphere\, though a contribution from the stratosphere cannot be ruled out. There is strong evidence that this vigorous organic chemistry is driven primarily by absorption of ultraviolet sunlight. The contributions of energetic electrons and ions from Saturn's magnetosphere is minor and perhaps unimportant\, contrary to many pre-Cassini models. Oxygen-bearing molecules are an exception to this and may be due entirely to magnetospheric input. Production and transport of small\, stable hydrocarbons is fairly well understood\, but much remains to be done to understand the production of the larger molecules and aerosols. The physical processes and chemical pathways involved in the production of these large organic molecules may provide excellent guidance for how a similar chemistry evolved on early Earth.

SUMMARY:Negotiating Conditions for Career Success
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona ADVANCE distinguished speaker will be Deborah Kolb\, Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership at Simmons College.Negotiation is a critical skill in academia\; it is one of the ways the system works. When a woman faculty member fails to negotiate for what she needs to be successful\, the potential for the accumulation of disadvantage magnifies. This is true for faculty members early in their careers and for more senior faculty members who need to negotiate to be successful in leadership roles. Research suggests that women faculty members are often less likely than their male colleagues to negotiate for what they need\, in part because they do not recognize the opportunities to negotiate\, and also because they can meet resistance when they do so. To be successful in negotiations requires clarity about what can be negotiated. However\, more goes on in a negotiation than the debate over terms of the agreement. As we bargain over issues\, a parallel discussion - or shadow negotiation - is taking place simultaneously. The shadow negotiation is where relationships\, perceptions of power and control\, and hidden agendas are most likely to surface. Working from case examples drawn from a variety of settings\, Kolb will help participants develop practical skills for managing the shadow negotiation in ways that promote their interests and those of the University.

SUMMARY:David J. Lewis - \"Opportunistic Architecture\: Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis\"
DESCRIPTION:David J. Lewis is a founding partner and principal of Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis\, or LTL. Started in 1997 by Paul Lewis\, Marc Tsurumaki and David J. Lewis\, Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis is an innovative\, award-winning architecture partnership that pursues a diverse range of work\, from large scale academic and cultural buildings to interior architecture to competitions. LTL's approach is to realize inventive solutions that turn the very constraints of each project into the design trajectory\, exploring overlaps between space\, program\, form\, budget and materials. The firm's work has been extensively published and exhibited internationally. LTL Architects received the 2007 National Design Award for Interior Architecture from the Cooper-Hewitt\, National Design Museum and was selected as one of six American architectural firms featured in the U.S. Pavilion at the 2004 Venice Architecture Biennale. In addition\, LTL was included in the 2000 National Design Triennial at the Cooper-Hewitt and was selected in December 2000 by Architectural Record as one of ten firms representing a Vanguard in Contemporary Architecture. Lewis\, Tsurumaki and Lewis are co-authors of two books\, the monograph \"Opportunistic Architecture\,\" published by Princeton Architectural Press in 2008 and \"Situation Normal ... Pamphlet Architecture #21\,\" published by Princeton Architectural Press in 1998.

DESCRIPTION:The Arizona Symphony Orchestra will present its spring concert  under the baton of Thomas Cockrell and Rogers Institute conductors Keitaro Harada and Jackson Warren. The program will include  Ludwig van Beethoven's \"Overture to Egmont\,\" Maurice Ravel's \"Le Tombeau de Couperin\" and Dmitry Shostakovich's \"Symphony No. 1.\"Beethoven was inspired to write his \"Overture to Egmont\" by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's play about political oppression\, and the music convincingly captures the spirit of human struggle and liberation.  Ravel's \"Tombeau\" is a homage to ancient dance forms\, and the result is a masterpiece that melds Baroque sensibility with modern harmonies and virtuosic orchestral writing. Shostakovich completed his first symphony while still a teenager. The work is chamber in size and scope and considered one of his first masterpieces.

SUMMARY:College of Science NEXT\: Science that Transforms
DESCRIPTION:In the near future\, several large-scale research projects under way in astronomy\, physics\, biology\, cybernetics and medicine have the potential to reshape our understanding of the universe and ourselves. Their insights and observations will provide a front-row seat to the epic scientific discoveries that the world may be making next.March 10 NEXT\: Really Intelligent ComputersPaul Cohen\, professor and head of computer scienceHalfway through its first century\, artificial intelligence has delivered some astonishing successes on narrowly defined tasks\: cars that drive themselves\, airline reservation systems you can talk to\, search engines for the Web. Yet these accomplishments have failed to match the general\, flexible\, adaptive mind of a 2-year-old child. By understanding the differences between childlike and computer intelligence\, we set the stage for the development of really intelligent computers.
