SUMMARY:Sunshine on Cast Shadow\: David Choong Lee
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona's Joseph Gross Gallery presents David Choong Lee's \"Sunshine on Cast Shadow.\"There will be a reception on June 26 from 5-7 p.m.Based out of San Francisco's street art movement\, Korean born artist Lee reflects on social conditions within youth culture\, urban environments and generation \"next\,\" tapping into both American and Korean visual aesthetics.  Sociopolitical and economic issues surrounding homelessness and youth populations are at the heart of Lee's paintings\, which play with the subcultures' politics of power\, judgment and perception. Lee's on-location assemblages embody concepts that float between his choice of subject matter\, materiality and technique. The graffiti-like amalgamations fold in traditional figurative portraiture and promote public discourse\, challenging the notion of what is considered fine art. Rembrandt\, Van Gogh\, Sukdo and the underground DJ Movement have largely influenced his art.Lee has been widely exhibited in a variety of spaces including Bucheon Gallery and White Walls Gallery in San Francisco\, Joshua Liner Gallery in New York City and Yves LaRoche in Montreal\, Quebec\, Canada. The Joseph Gross is open Monday through Friday\, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and is free to the public. The Joseph Gross and Lionel Rombach Galleries are located on the UA campus between the Museum of Art  and the Center for Creative Photography. Parking is available on Second Street\, east of Park Avenue or in the parking garage north of Speedway on Park Avenue.

SUMMARY:Classical Forms and the Structures of Language
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona Lionel Rombach Gallery is proud to present Noé Badillo's \"Classical Forms and the Structures of Language.\"There will be an artist talk on July 2\, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.Badillo's Bachelor of Fine Arts honors' thesis exhibition is an exploration of language as geometric structure and symbol.   In \"Classical Forms and the Structures of Language\,\" Badillo responds to the idea of secret intelligence within current military communications. Influenced by Sol LeWitt\, Badillo examines language as code through the use of charts\, ciphers\, and portraiture in his work. His paintings combine semiotics with classical composition and portraiture to create hidden stories abstracted in the folds of each brush stroke. The gallery is open Monday through Friday\, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is free to the public. The Joseph Gross and Lionel Rombach Galleries are located on the UA campus between the Museum of Art  and the Center for Creative Photography. SUMMARY:\"Arctic Spirit\: Inuit Art from the Albrecht Collection\"
DESCRIPTION: The University of Arizona Libraries Special Collections welcomes \"Arctic Spirit\: Inuit Art from the Albrecht Collection\,\" a traveling exhibit of the Canadian Inuit's rich artistic history. Chosen from a Heard Museum collection donated by UA alumnus Daniel Albrecht\, the sculptures\, textiles and graphics offer a rare opportunity to view Inuit artwork. The Inuits\, or Eskimos\, are a society of natives who live mainly in Siberia\, Alaska\, Greenland and the Canadian Arctic. Although many consider these various groups to be homogenous\, Arctic Spirit showcases the artistic styles that are distinctly of the Canadian Inuit. The exhibit has been brought to Special Collections through the generosity of Albrecht\, and is curated by Ingo Hessel who has researched Inuit art extensively for more than 20 years. See the UA Libraries' summer hours schedule to plan your visit.

SUMMARY:\"Our Fathers\, Our Grandfathers\, Our Heroes ... The Navajo Code Talkers of World War II\"
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit traces the story of\, and is a tribute to\, the famed United States Marine Corps Navajo Code Talkers. A pilot group of 29 volunteers developed and tested the original code\, based on the Navajo language\, in 1942. Proven fast\, accurate and completely baffling to the Japanese\, the Marine Corps recruited nearly 400 more Navajo men to utilize the encryption in the transmission of critical communications throughout the Pacific theater. The ingenuity of the Navajo code\, and the valor of the Navajo Marines\, greatly helped in the effort to win the war in the Pacific. SUMMARY:\"Places In Between\" by Andrea Jensen
DESCRIPTION:In \"Places In Between\,\" Andrea Jensen explores the psychological spaces she perceives American society utilizes to escape from our material world. The juxtaposition of current economic hardship and our consumer culture pull us to desire what once was and what will be. Jensen's work questions why we need to resolve our desires and how those desires bypass the present state our world is in.Her paintings employ a muted color palette to express nostalgia in union with more powerfully saturated hues to convey hopeful idealism for the future. The abstracted forms in the work align with objects from nature and reference American culture in a state of suspension where life is neither here nor there\, but placed intuitively in between.Gallery hours are Monday through Friday\, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. It is free to the public. The Joseph Gross and Lionel Rombach Galleries are located on The University of Arizona campus between the Museum of Art  and the Center for Creative Photography. Parking is available on Second Street\, east of Park Avenue or in the parking garage north of Speedway on Park Avenue. Please visit our Web site.

SUMMARY:Tyler Volk - Presentation and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Tyler Volk\, an associate professor at New York University and author of \"CO2 Rising\: The World's Greatest Environmental Challenge\,\" will give a presentation and book signing. The most colossal environmental disturbance in human history is under way. Ever-rising levels of the potent greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2) are altering the cycles of matter and life and interfering with Earth's natural cooling process. Melting Arctic ice and mountain glaciers are just the first relatively mild symptoms of what will result from this disruption of the planetary energy balance. In \"CO2 Rising\,\" Volk explains the process at the heart of global warming and climate change\: the global carbon cycle. Volk describes what happens when CO2 is released by the combustion of fossil fuels\, letting loose carbon atoms once trapped deep underground into the interwoven web of air\, water and soil. Demonstrating how the carbon cycle works\, Volk traces the paths that carbon atoms take during their global circuits. Showing us the carbon cycle from a carbon atom's viewpoint\, he follows one carbon atom into a barley leaf\, then into an alcohol molecule in a glass of beer\, through the human bloodstream\, and then back into the air. He also compares the fluxes of carbon brought into the biosphere naturally with those created by the combustion of fossil fuels and explains why the latter are responsible for rising temperatures. Knowledge about the global carbon cycle and the huge disturbances that human activity produces in it will equip us to consider the hard questions that Volk raises in the second half of CO2 Rising\: projections of future levels of CO2\; which energy systems and processes (solar\, wind\, nuclear\, carbon sequestration?) will power civilization in the future\; the relationships among the wealth of nations\, energy use and CO2 emissions\; and global equity in per capita emissions. Answering these questions will indeed be our greatest environmental challenge.

SUMMARY:KEYS Poster Session
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to generous statewide support\, 22 exceptional southern Arizona high school students will have the chance to gain hands-on experience with the biosciences and environmental health science this summer during the annual KEYS (Keep Engaging Youth in Science) Internship Program. The University of Arizona's BIO5 Institute and the Southwest Environmental Health Sciences Center\, known as SWEHSC\, at The University of Arizona College of Pharmacy direct the program. A total of $18\,000 in outside funding was secured from a variety of sources to continue the KEYS program following budget cuts earlier this year. Contributors included the Arizona Department of Education\, Sanofi-Aventis Pharmaceuticals\, the iPlant Collaborative\, The Harpel Company and a number of private donors. This year's students are from Tucson-area high schools\, including Pueblo\, Catalina\, University\, Sunnyside\, Salpointe\, Empire\, St. Gregory's\, Basis\, Catalina Foothills and Marana. The students were chosen competitively from 58 applicants. Students' internship experiences will include a weeklong training institute and then research under the mentorship of UA investigators and graduate students\, which will culminate in presentations to their peers and the public in a poster session. They also will attend weekly seminars to discuss their experiences and practice science communication skills. The students have selected research focus areas such as genetics/molecular biology\, pharmacology/toxicology and computational biology/bioinformatics. More than 20 UA researchers\, including Arizona Genomics Institute director Rod Wing and SWEHC director Serrine S. Lau\, will host the students in their laboratories.

SUMMARY:Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies' Summer Lecture Series 2009
DESCRIPTION:The University  of Arizona's Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies\, with St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church\, presents Summer Lecture Series 2009\: \"Pilgrimage.\" Sean Clark\, a Ph.D. student\, will discuss \"Umbilicus Mundi\: Jerusalem as a Medieval Pilgrimage Destination\" This year's Division for Late Medieval and Reformation Studies' speakers will take us back in time to the Middle Ages and lead us to four pilgrimage sites that were very significant for European Christianity\: The Holy Land\, Rome\, Canterbury and Santiago de Compostela.  We will imagine the pilgrims' journeys and listen in on their  social interactions. We will hear of sites that memorialize Christ's life\, a major saint's life\, a great miracle or divine appearance\, and we will learn of the rituals that evolved in association with each place. The lectures will probe the motives of pilgrims. Did they originate in piety\, penance for a sin committed\, the fulfillment of a vow and/or the search for a miraculous cure? Other lectures will take place on Aug.2\, 9 and 16.
