SUMMARY:\"Footsteps of Water\" 19th Annual CMES Photography Exibit
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Middle Eastern Studies is hosting its 19th annual photography exhibit\, \"Footsteps of Water\,\" featuring images that signify the importance of water in the Middle East. SUMMARY:Zoom Zaum Zapf\: An Experimental Poetry Workshop with Charles Alexander
DESCRIPTION:Experimental poetry begins with the commitment to invent rather than the urge to express (though expression occurs\, inevitably). In this course we'll begin by writing simple acrostics and then move on to homolinguistic and homophonic translations\, between-the-lines poems\, inside-the-letters poems\, \"procedural\" poems (where constraint rules the day)\, conceptual poems\, torn poems\, found poems\, appropriated poems\, shuffled and color-wheel and mixed-genre poems and more\, all in an attempt to break through normative ego-based composition (while fully acknowledging that we all have egos that are here to stay) and to travel paths we can't quite find without such experiments.Participants may find that after this class they will continue to discover new territories with or without experimental rules in place. This course includes both reading (Bernadette Mayer\, Jackson Mac Low\, Susan Howe\, bpNichol\, Caroline Bergvall) and writing of poetry\, and requires a willing and adventurous spirit and an open mind. Appropriate for writers of all levels of experience. Call or visit the Poetry Center to register.

SUMMARY:\"New Topographics\" Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition \"New Topographics\: Photographs of a Man-altered Landscape\,\" held in 1975 at George Eastman House\, signaled the emergence of a new approach to landscape photography. A new version of this seminal exhibition re-examines more than 100 works from the 1975 show\, as well as some 30 prints and books by other relevant artists to provide additional historical and contemporary context. This reconsideration demonstrates both the historical significance of these pictures and their continued relevance today.

SUMMARY:UA Theatre Arts - Battle of the Sexes
DESCRIPTION: \"The Taming of the Shrew\,\" by William Shakespeare\, and \"The Tamer Tamed\,\" by John Fletcher\, will be presented in rotating repertory by the University of Arizona's Arizona Repertory Theatre. Both are directed by Brent Gibbs. There are two sides to every story\; this is an opportunity to experience both. One of Shakespeare's most controversial comedies\, \"The Taming of the Shrew\,\" is a wry and witty battle of the sexes. Renowned for her sharp tongue\, Kate vows never to wed. Hearing of her sizeable dowry\, the flamboyant Petruchio agrees to marry Kate sight-unseen. After a tempestuous meeting\, Petruchio engages in an unconventional and surprising courtship as he tries to \"tame\" Kate. Written by Shakespeare's collaborator and protégé\, Fletcher's \"The Tamer Tamed\" continues Shakespeare's beloved battle of the sexes\, painting a post-nuptial portrait in stark contrast to that of \"Shrew.\" Petruchio remarries after Katherine's death only to discover that his new wife\, Maria\, has devised a plan to prove that women are equal to men.     The plays will be performed in rotation\, with a different show every night. Each play stands on its own\, so audiences can enjoy them individually or in whatever order works best for them. Director Gibbs explains\, \"Audiences get the rare chance to experience the work of both William Shakespeare and his collaborator and eventual successor\, John Fletcher. Together they show how difficult and rewarding the struggle for love can be.\" Dates and times\:\"Taming of the Shrew\"Previews\: Feb. 21 at 1\:30 p.m.\, Feb. 22 at 7\:30 p.m.Evenings\: Feb. 24-26 and March 10\, 11\, 13\, 26 at 7\:30 p.m.Matinees\: Feb. 27\, March 7 and 27 at 1\:30 p.m. \"The Tamer Tamed\" Previews\: Feb. 28 at 1\:30 p.m.\, March 1 at 7\:30 p.m.Evenings\: March 3-6\, 12\, 25\, 27 at 7\:30 p.m.Matinees\: March 6\, 13\, 28 at 1\:30 p.m.

DESCRIPTION:Erin Garber-Pearson presents \"Presently Decoding\,\" the candy cell phone project.Cellular phones mark a rapid change in technology that can be mapped out in less than one lifetime - a new language has been developed and is in constant alteration. This dialect is fragmented from larger social contexts and conditions that give it meaning and value. The immediacy of this form of exchange began as a tool and now has reached far into our psyche\, often distancing us from the patience required to deeply investigate the world we live in.  \"Presently Decoding\" combines the experience of public performance into a humorous and playful multimedia installation. Viewers are invited to participate\; sharing in an awareness of the role technology has taken in our relationship to the material world.Gallery hours are Monday through Friday\, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday\, 12-4 p.m.The Joseph Gross and Lionel Rombach Galleries are located on the  University of Arizona campus between the Museum of Art  and the Center for Creative Photography. SUMMARY:UA Theatre Arts Presents \"Eurydice\"
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona School of Theatre Arts presents \"Eurydice\,\" by Sarah Ruhl\, directed by Kevin Black. Tackling such universal themes as love and loss and life and death\, Ruhl's \"Eurydice\" is a daring reinvention of the Greek myth \"Orpheus.\" The wedding day of Eurydice and Orpheus is interrupted by the death of the bride\, setting Eurydice on a new journey that takes her to the depths of the underworld. It is here\, in a place filled with irreverent\, comical and unsettling characters\, that she is reunited with her beloved father. Eurydice must make choices between the past and the future\, between the love for her father and the love of her fiancé\, and ultimately between life and death. Ruhl's contemporary\, imaginative tale opens a window into Eurydice's heart and mind as she tries to answer the questions we must all eventually face. Director Black is a member of the School of Theatre Arts faculty\, teaching acting and voice and movement. He is also a member of the Arizona Repertory Theatre company and has been seen recently as Otto Frank in \"The Diary of Anne Frank\,\" Doc Myers in \"Leading Ladies\" and Titus in \"Titus Andronicus.\" Dates and times\: March 4\, 5\, 6 at 8 p.m. March 7 at 2 p.m. Parking is available in the Park Avenue Garage\, located on Park Avenue just north of Speedway Boulevard. SUMMARY:\"Salvador Corona\: Matador to Muralist\" Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition highlights the works of beloved Mexican-born muralist and decorative artist Salvador Corona (1895-1984). Beginning in 1919 following a career as a bullfighter\, which ended when his leg was gored\, Corona worked artistically in Mexico\, Tucson and other parts of Southern Arizona. His murals\, easel paintings and painted furniture graced (in some cases still grace) homes and businesses all over the region\, illustrating idyllic pastoral scenes of Mexico's past. This is the second exhibition in Arizona State Museum's \"2010 Year of Mexico\" bicentennial and centennial celebrations.Â

SUMMARY:\"Mostly Oaxaca\" - Photo Exhibit by Edwina Scott
DESCRIPTION:Oaxaca is like a city in a Technicolor dream. Some writers have called it \"The Spirit of Mexico.\" The buildings are brightly colored and often decorated with carvings. Colorful banners and balloons fly high\, stacks of pottery line the shelves in stalls\, multi-colored rugs decorate walls and candles\, flowers and religious folk art are intermingled everywhere. Oaxaca is a photographer's dream and many have photographed these vivid scenes. However\, my attention was drawn to the people who live in mountain villages that surround the city of Oaxaca. Although their clothing is somewhat colorful\, their lives are not. These are the craft makers who sell their wares in town. Each village seems to have a specialty.   I was fascinated with these proud people and decided to photograph them in black and white. I found that by eliminating color I discovered the truer characteristics of these indigenous people who are descended from the Zapotec and Mixtec tribes. Their culture\, which is a combination of the Roman Catholic faith mixed in with their ancestral customs\, centers around the Catholic church.  The colonial Catholic churches are unusually large and ornate in contrast to the simple homes and lifestyles of the people. Often in the villages\, women and children are barefoot at Mass. Dogs and family pets can also be seen wandering in and out of churches. Processions are held on holy days\, and flowers and incense are used abundantly as statues of saints are raised on shoulders and paraded around the churchyard.    &nbsp\;These photographs were taken mostly in the state of Oaxaca\, but several were taken later in the state of Guerrero\, which is directly northwest of Oaxaca. They depict the indigenous people and a glimpse into their lives. These photos were printed digitally.

SUMMARY:College of Science Lecture Series\: Mind and Brain
DESCRIPTION:Leslie Tolbert\, Regents' Professor of Neuroscience and Vice President for Research at the University of Arizona will discuss \"The Plastic Brain.\" The human brain is the most complex object known to us. It contains roughly a trillion nerve cells\, each of which may make thousands of connections\, in immense networks of circuitry that control our sense of self and our appreciation of - and interaction with - the world around us. In the last half century we learned that we are born with raw circuitry that quickly tunes itself to the environment we encounter. Now we are learning that the properties that allow nerve cells to achieve this \"plasticity\" in response to the early environment are controlled by the very same genes that drive learning and memory in adults. The human brain\, and the mind it creates\, is enormously complex. Everything we do\, feel and think emerges from billions of nerve cells and their interconnections. Brain development is shaped by evolution and genetics\, but is also greatly affected by experience. The mind takes shape through exposure to individuals and cultures\, and becomes a constructive and predictive device. It creates inner worlds - past\, present and future - that allow us to behave in highly adaptive ways\, if we so choose. It also allows us to engage in risky behavior and make bad decisions. Six speakers in this UA College of Science series will explore how brains are built\, how minds are made\, and how modern cognitive and neural science is changing the way we think about memory\, money\, morality\, mortality and more. Parking is available on a pay per use basis in the Tyndall Avenue Garage. Call 520-621-4090 or go to the College of Science Web site for more information.

DESCRIPTION:Aranda\\Lasch is a New York-based architectural studio dedicated to experimental research and innovative building. Established in 2003 by Chris Lasch and Benjamin Aranda\, the studio designs buildings\, installations and objects through a deep investigation of materials and structure. The approach can be described as intuitive computing\, which is not about problem solving but rather opening up new opportunities in design. Winners of the United States Artists Award and Young Architects Award in 2007\, their early architectural projects are the subject of the book \"Pamphlet Architecture #27\: Tooling.\" In 2008 the studio collaborated with artist Matthew Ritchie on a pavilion-sized work\, \"The Morning Line\,\" for the 2008 Venice Biennial and the Seville Biennial. In addition to commercial and residential projects in New York\, the studio completed a 42\,000-square-foot temporary structure for Design Miami in 2009. Aranda\\Lasch continually develops experimental furniture products that explore new concepts in fabrication and assembly and are represented by Johnson Trading Gallery in New York. Aranda\\Lasch will be featured in the upcoming 2010 Venice Architecture Biennial.

SUMMARY:Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine Grand Rounds
DESCRIPTION:Early life exposures to environmental contaminants may disrupt neurodevelopment and produce physical and physiologic alterations predisposing to disease and disability later in life. These risks are modified by the social environment\, a fact that supports early intervention as well as prevention of exposures. This presentation will provide a context for clinicians answering patient questions about low dose environmental exposures to chemicals such as bisphenol A and flame retardants. Dr. Mark Miller is an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of California San Francisco. He currently serves as the director of the University of California San Francisco Pediatric Environmental Health Specialty Unit  and as a public health medical officer for the California Environmental Protection Agency Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment. He completed his doctor of medicine degree and pediatric residency at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and a Master of Public Health degree in environmental health sciences from the School of Public Health at University of California\, Berkeley. He completed a residency in preventive medicine with the California Department of Health Services. Miller spent 13 years as a pediatrician in private practice in Chico\, Calif. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and co-chairman of California Chapter 1\, American Academy of Pediatrics Environmental Health Committee. In addition\, he is a former member of the American Academy of Pediatrics National Committee on Environmental Health. Miller's articles on pediatric environmental health issues have appeared in such publications as Pediatrics\, Environmental Health Perspectives\, Integrative Pediatrics and the Handbook of Pediatric Environmental Health\, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics. The views expressed by Miller are his and do not necessarily represent those of the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment of the California Environmental Protection Agency.

SUMMARY:Higher Education Colloquium\: Lobbyist Panel
DESCRIPTION:Greg Fahey\, University of Arizona associate vice president of government relations\, and Christine Thompson\, Arizona Board of Regents assistant executive director of government affairs\, will participate in a lobbyist panel.   Higher education is facing an unprecedented economic crisis. The nationwide economic recession has left many state budgets in an upheaval and has severely impacted institutions of higher education across the United States. Public universities in particular are caught in a tight balancing act of generating additional revenue while maintaining their land-grant missions. While higher education scholars have investigated and theorized about institutional change few have actually engaged institutional leaders and the local community - including legislators\, lobbyists and other leaders - on the current problems\, the decision making processes and creative solutions. This unique colloquium invites higher education and community leaders to share their experiences and insights and engage in meaningful dialogue on forging unchartered solutions.

SUMMARY:College of Science Lecture Series\: Mind and Brain
DESCRIPTION:Anna Dornhaus\, assistant professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona\, will discuss \"Evolution of Mind and Brain.\" What does anybody need a brain for? Brains are energetically expensive to make and to use\, and susceptible to making mistakes. Accordingly\, not learning\, or sticking to an innate or random strategy\, is often the best thing to do. Still\, many animals display sophisticated learning and cognition. Recent research has demonstrated that the brain is not a general-purpose machine\: Each animal has specific learning abilities and lacks others according to its environment and evolutionary history. Understanding what these different brains are used for can help us understand why they evolved. Six speakers in this UA College of Science series will explore how brains are built\, how minds are made and how modern cognitive and neural science is changing the way we think about memory\, money\, morality\, mortality and more. Parking is available on a pay per use basis in the Tyndall Avenue Garage. Call 520-621-4090 or go to the College of Science Web site for more information.

SUMMARY:Professor Leon Blitzer and Pauline Blitzer Award Winner Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The Professor Leon Blitzer and Pauline Blitzer Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Physics and Related Sciences will be presented to University of Arizona physics professor Elliott Cheu. Cheu\, associate dean of the College of Science and a member of the Large Hadron Collider-ATLAS team\, will give a public lecture titled \"What's the Matter with Matter? How the Universe Lost its Antimatter and Why it Became so Dark.\" Professor Leon Blitzer began his nearly 70-year association with the UA in 1936 as a physics undergraduate student. He obtained his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the UA in 1938 and 1939 and his doctorate from Cal Tech in 1943. He returned to Tucson in 1946 as an assistant professor of physics and at the time was one of the few UA faculty members to pursue research in addition to his teaching responsibilities. His research focused on spectroscopy\, astrophysics and celestial mechanics. At age 33\, he became the youngest full professor on campus. Blitzer was the driving force behind starting the Ph.D. program in the physics department. After retiring in 1986\, he remained active in the department for years\, advising undergraduates and mentoring University physics teachers. The Blitzer award is funded by an endowment set up by the children and friends of Leon and Pauline Blitzer\, who were UA alumni\, in 2005.

SUMMARY:Higher Education Colloquium\: Association of American University Professors General Secretary Gary Rhoades
DESCRIPTION:Higher education is facing an unprecedented economic crisis. The nationwide economic recession has left many state budgets in an upheaval and has severely impacted institutions of higher education across the United States. Public universities in particular are caught in a tight balancing act of generating additional revenue while maintaining their land-grant missions. While higher education scholars have investigated and theorized about institutional change\, few have actually engaged institutional leaders and the local community - including legislators\, lobbyists and other leaders - on the current problems\, the decision making processes and creative solutions. This unique colloquium invites higher education and community leaders to share their experiences and insights and engage in meaningful dialogue on forging unchartered solutions. All University of Arizona students\, faculty\, staff and local community members are invited!

SUMMARY:Let's Talk Science!
DESCRIPTION:Connie Woodhouse\, associate professor in the School of Geography and Regional Development at the University of Arizona\, will discuss \"Tree Rings and Colorado River Drought\: A Message from the Past with Implications for the Future.\"  The gage record for the Colorado River is barely 100 years long. While that may seem like a long span of time\, the record contains just three major droughts. Are these droughts representative of the range of droughts that are possible? Should we expect more severe droughts in the future? Tree rings allow us to reconstruct a history of past river flow\, going back over 12 centuries. The reconstruction of Colorado River flow shows that droughts much more severe have occurred in the past\, under natural climate variability alone. In this presentation\, Woodhouse will show how we develop these reconstructions from tree rings\, describe the droughts of the medieval period and discuss how information from the past is relevant to the future.

SUMMARY:The Vienna Boys Choir
DESCRIPTION:For its first 400 years\, only kings and their courts were privileged to hear them. Franz Schubert was a member and both Joseph and Michael Haydn sang with them. The choir still performs Sunday mass at the Imperial Chapel but\, since 1926\, the privilege of listening to them has encompassed the globe. Four choirs tour regularly throughout Europe and are frequent guests in Asia\, Australia and the Americas. Their repertoire spans their history\, from medieval chansons and Renaissance music to masses and lieder by Schubert.

SUMMARY:Daniel Bartlett Memorial Lecture\: \"The Fourth Dimension and Salvador Dali\"
DESCRIPTION:Salvador Dali\, throughout his long career\, was fascinated by images and concepts from science and mathematics\, and he incorporated many of them into his paintings. The central object in his 1954 painting \"Corpus Hypercubicus\" is a Christ figure on an unfolded hypercube from the fourth dimension. That painting put geometer Tom Banchoff of Brown University in contact with the artist\, leading to a dozen meetings  over the period of 1975-1985. In this talk\, Professor Banchoff will give a personal report on insights into why Dali chose the mathematical ideas he included in his work\, and how he went about constructing and carrying out his paintings. Topics include exaggerated perspective\, pattern recognition and catastrophe theory. The presentation will feature computer generated images and animations\, as well as excepts from the documentary \"The Dali Dimension.\"The Daniel Bartlett Memorial Lecture recognizes a great scholar whose life ended much too soon. Bartlett was a Presidential and National Merit Scholar from University High School and and accomplished math scholar and musician.  He was in his fourth year of graduate school in mathematics when he died tragically from cardiac arrest in 2006.

SUMMARY:The Politically Correct University\: Lecture and Discussion
DESCRIPTION: The Arizona Association of Scholars and the UA BookStores are proud to present a public lecture featuring Robert Maranto\, the 21st Century Chair in Leadership in the department of education reform at the University of Arkansas. Maranto will discuss his recent book\, \"The Politically Correct University.\" About the book\: \"Political correctness is one of the primary enemies of freedom of thought in higher education today\, undermining our ability to acquire\, transmit and process knowledge. Political correctness limits the variation of ideas by an ideologically driven concern for hue rather than view. This volume is not simply another rant\; there are good data here\, along with well-crafted\, hard-to-ignore logical interpretations and arguments. It is the sort of work that those who adhere to idea-limiting notions of the university will try to trivialize. That alone should make it important reading.\" -Michael Schwartz\, president emeritus\, Kent State University and Cleveland State University

SUMMARY:Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Youdin from the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics is the scheduled speaker.Recent years have seen significant advances in our understanding of how planetesimals\, solids bigger than a kilometer\, first formed. Youdin will describe dynamical processes that compliment the collisional sticking of small grains. Self-gravity can collect a sea of small solids into a gravitationally bound planetesimal\, but stirring by turbulent gas is a formidable obstacle. However several processes can concentrate particles in gas disks - both despite and because of turbulence. The most powerful is the streaming instability\, mediated by two-way drag forces between solids and gas. Overdense particle clumps can then collapse gravitationally into planetesimals. Numerical simulations demonstrate the viability of these mechanisms. Youdin will discuss outstanding questions and connections to the planetesimal belts in our solar system. Finally he will briefly comment on a different type of gravitational collapse\, that of gas disks into giant planets and brown dwarfs. He will discuss whether recently imaged exoplanets could form by this mechanism.

SUMMARY:College of Science Lecture Series\: Mind and Brain
DESCRIPTION:LouAnn Gerken\, professor of psychology and director of the cognitive science program at the University of Arizona\, will discuss \"The Making of a Mind.\" We're all born with a brain\, but when does our brain begin to construct a model of the world - a mind? Research now suggests that infants not only absorb a remarkable amount of information about the physical and social world\, they also use this information much like scientists to make guesses about the structure of that world. By creating tentative models of different aspects of the world based on very small amounts of data\, infants use their developing models to predict the behavior of objects\, people and the world around them.

SUMMARY:LPL50 Anniversary Alumnus Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Mark V. Sykes\, Lunar and Planetary Laboratory alumnus and director of Tucson's Planetary Science Institute\, will give a lecture titled \"When Dust Gets in Your Eyes\: A Different View of the Solar System Emerges at LPL in 1980s.\" In the early 1980s\, worlds in the outer solar system were being seen up close for the first time. Sykes discovered large new structures in the inner solar system studying data from a small satellite named IRAS. Comet trails (looking for all the world like airplane contrails in space) changed our understanding of the basic composition of comets. Rings of dust around the sun arose from asteroid collisions and revealed an interplanetary dust complex that was highly variable over time. Sykes also began his study of asteroids\, primarily in the thermal infrared\, and is now a co-investigator on the Dawn mission to the two largest asteroids in the main belt. Then there was Pluto... Heineken Prize for History and a 2009 honorary doctor of theology at the University of Göttingen will discuss \"Religion and Violence\: What We Can Learn From European Confessional Fundamentalism of the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries.\"The connection between religion and violence that is currently discussed in the media with regard to Muslim extremism is not a new phenomenon. In the 16th and 17th centuries\, Europe experienced religiously motivated violence with no less severe consequences\: Around the year 1600\, the meshing of religion and politics in Europe resulted in a number of civil and inter-state religious wars which temporarily called into question the continued existence of European civilization.Starting with the political and religious upheavals of the early 16th century\, and especially with Erasmus' and Luther's role\, this lecture will describe the structural\, cultural and mental preconditions for the development of this dangerous amalgam of religion and violence\, as well as consider the conditions for finding ways out of this trap. With the peace agreements of the mid-17th century\, especially the Peace of Westphalia ending the Thirty Years' War\, Europe redefined the relationship between religion and politics. A new legal and structural framework was created by establishing a secular definition of war and peace. Although history cannot provide us with direct political strategies for dealing with Islamic fundamentalism\, it shows us that ways out of similarly dangerous configuration have been found before. This lecture is co-sponsored by the department of history\, the Institute for the Study of Religion and Culture\, the religious studies program\, the Group for Early Modern Studies\, and the UA Medieval\, Renaissance\, and Reformation Committee.A reception will follow in the Student Union Memorial Center's Ventana Room.Parking is available in the Second Street Garage at the southeast corner of Mountain Avenue and Second Street.

SUMMARY:Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Jack Holt\, from the University of Texas Institute for Geophysics\, will present \"'X-Ray Vision' - A New View of Mars Ice and Climate from Orbital Radar Sounding.\"An entirely new form of planetary exploration began in 2005 when Mars Express\, followed by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in late 2006\, began returning data from the first radar sounders to orbit another planet. Placing this active geophysical technique in orbit allows us to complement high-resolution surface and near-surface observations across Mars with measurements of material properties in the vertical dimension\, penetrating rocky surface layers and extending to depths of kilometers in ice. Assisted by experience with similar studies in Antarctica\, we have gained significant new insights into both the state of massive ice deposits and processes governing the large-scale evolution of ice on Mars. In the northern polar layered deposits\, radar has confirmed that the bulk composition is nearly pure water ice\, and radar-based mapping of subsurface stratigraphy and structure has now revealed a previously unknown history of deposition and erosion leading to the formation of the two largest geomorphic anomalies there\, Chasma Boreale and the pervasive spiral troughs. These features had eluded explanation since their discovery by Mariner 9 almost 40 years ago. Our new view of processes governing polar ice also provides critical context for evaluating climate models including the transfer of ice between the poles and lower latitudes where ice has been found in abundance by multiple recent missions and techniques. Given our new knowledge and an ability to conduct analog studies on Earth\, it will be possible to tailor future radar missions to more thoroughly study Mars ice and to extend such studies to the icy moons of our solar system.

SUMMARY:Hybridity and Latin America\: Discourse\, History and the Limits of Race
DESCRIPTION:Joshua Lund\, of the University of Pittsburgh\, will lead a roundtable discussion on \"Hybridity and Latin America\: Discourse\, History\, and the Limits of Race.\"For centuries\, the idea of racial or cultural mixedness has long figured as the axiomatic ground of Latin American identity. But does its ideological pervasiveness occlude more ambiguity than it presumes to resolve? This interdisciplinary panel\, composed of students from Spanish and Portuguese\, history\, and Latin American studies\, will examine hybridity's significance as a socio-cultural hermeneutic\, the political implications of its many historical and theoretical assumptions and its future as a critical concept in 21st century Latin America. The event is sponsored by the University of Arizona's department of Spanish and Portuguese and the Center for Latin American Studies. SUMMARY:The University of Arizona Wind Ensemble in concert presented by the School of Music at The University of Arizona
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona Wind Ensemble will present a spring concert that will include four pieces of varying styles\, two of which will feature faculty soloist\, professor Daniel Katzen\, on horn. Katzen will perform the \"Morceau de Concert\" by Camille Saint-Saens. A theme and variations style piece\, the \"Morceau\" is a standard work within the solo horn repertoire. The second piece will feature Katzen playing his alphorn on the \"Sinfonia Pastorale\" in G Major by Leopold Mozart. Originally scored for chamber strings\, here the \"Sinfonia\" will be performed using Scott Matlick's arrangement for chamber winds. The Wind Ensemble is directed by professor Gregg I. Hanson and will also include graduate conducting student Phil Felix. The concert will feature Symphony No. 3 by James Barnes. A work in the symphonic style\, this piece proved to be an emotionally significant work for the composer. Taking the listener from extreme sadness to extreme joy\, it is a powerful work for the wind band. Also on the program is \"Danceries\" by Kenneth Hesketh. Based partially on medieval dance melodies\, this four-movement work combines old world melodies with contemporary scoring and orchestration. The Wind Ensemble is open to any student on the UA campus through audition. The ensemble performs numerous concerts throughout the year featuring a varied repertoire.

SUMMARY:Higher Education Colloquium\: Former Arizona Senate President Tim Bee

SUMMARY:Architecture Lecture by Atherton | Keener - \"Getting Warmer\: Reflections on Stopping Time\"
DESCRIPTION:One moment an overwhelming cacophony\, the next an unnoticed backdrop\, we are immersed in a constantly evolving sensory milieu. Complex and continually changing systems structure the physical world around us\, creating an eternal series of impermanent cycles. We experience and understand these systems through notions of time and change\, though it is often not possible to distinguish a beginning from an end. Light\, sound\, space\, heat\, cold\, aridity and dampness are the facts. Our bodies receive these facts and forge a chronological narrative between first light and last breath. These facts\, and the resulting narrative are the subject of investigation for Atherton | Keener.  Atherton | Keener is interested in bringing about meticulously researched and forethought constructions with the primary intention of expanding the intersection of sensory phenomena and time. These constructions are formally and materially static\, with the sole purpose of creating an opportunity for the unexpected. Places of interest reside between the boundaries of experience and memory.A Q&A will follow the talk.

SUMMARY:College of Science Lecture Series\: Mind and Brain
DESCRIPTION:Alfred W. Kaszniak\, professor and department head of psychology at the University of Arizona\, will discuss \"Metamemory\: How Does the Brain Predict Itself?\" Our brains recreate past experience\, monitor recall efforts and predict our chances of remembering things in the future. The knowledge we each possess about our own memory\, and strategies to aid in memory\, form what is called metamemory. Studies of persons with impaired metamemory due to neurological illness\, along with brain imaging studies of healthy adults making judgments about memory\, indicate that the brain systems active in retrieving information are distinct from those that self-monitor memory. Metamemory research is helping build an understanding of a wide range of experiences from tip-of-the-tongue forgetfulness to the symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

Irene d'Almeida\, head of the University of Arizona's department of French and Italian\, talks about her work collecting oral poetry produced by women among the Fon people in Benin.  Sandra K. Soto\, of the UA's women's studies department\, discusses the work of internationally renowned Mexican photographer Graciela Uturbide\, widely known for her photographs of everyday life of indigenous peoples in rural areas of Mexico. UA English professor Adela C. Licona moderates.\"Unsettling Certainties\: Conversations in the Humanities\" is a new community series from the College of Humanities.  Previous conversation topics included the persistence of racism in the U.S.\, deliberate cultural and literary offensiveness and funding of the arts from the Renaissance to the 21st century.Â

DESCRIPTION:Gregery T Buzzard\, of the department of mathematics at Purdue University\, will speak on \"Optimization and Regularization for a Model of a Robot Arm.\"   Vibration control is a vital part of producing usable robots\, but the application of good control algorithms is limited by the availability of a good model of the system. In this talk Buzzard will describe the modeling of a robot arm that is designed specifically to display large vibrational responses to control inputs. He'll focus on the selection of the model and the optimization of parameters with and without regularizing terms\, and discuss why what seems in advance like a good model is actually less useful than what seems in advance like a poor model.

SUMMARY:Lunar and Planetary Laboratory Colloquium
DESCRIPTION:Ilaria Pascucci from Johns Hopkins University will present a talk titled \"The Origins of Planetary Systems and Life\: Constraints from Protoplanetary Disks.\"What is the origin of the solar system and other planetary systems? How has life emerged on Earth? These are among the most fundamental questions in planetary science and astronomy. We are living in an exciting era where the history of the solar system is being revealed by in-situ measurements and sample returns from solar system objects\, laboratory analysis of meteorites\, and by astronomical observations. Pascucci will discuss how the study the protoplanetary disks can shed light on these fundamental questions. First\, Pascucci will show how the physical evolution of protoplanetary disks (grain growth\, dust settling and the dispersal of primordial gas) informs us on the timescales and mechanisms to form giant planets. Then\, Pascucci will present recent results on the chemical diversity and evolution of protoplanetary disks. Pascucci will conclude by discussing an ongoing effort to observationally trace the evolution of volatiles in disks with implications on their delivery to terrestrial planets.

SUMMARY:\"SIZZLE\: A Global Warming Comedy\" - Meet the Director\, One Night Only!
DESCRIPTION:The University of Arizona's School of Earth and Environmental Sciences\, or SEES\, is sponsoring a special presentation of \"SIZZLE\: A Global Warming Comedy.\" Writer-director Randy Olson will do a Q&A with the audience following the screening. He will be joined by UA climate scientists Julia Cole and Diana Liverman\, biologist Lisa Graumlich and journalism professor Jacqueline Sharkey. \"SIZZLE\" is a unique hybrid of three genres - mockumentary\, documentary and reality - that Variety called \"an exceedingly clever vehicle for making science engaging to a general audience.\" It is the only U.S. movie that presents both sides of the global warming issue and is more timely than ever given the rocky waters the global warming movement has recently hit. The film screening is a highlight of the school's first annual EarthWeek\, March 29-April 2\, a celebration of student research in the earth and environmental sciences. Karl Flessa\, director of SEES and head of the UA department of geosciences\, says\, \"It's all about science and communicating science. Randy's participation demonstrates that science isn't just important\, it's important and fun.\" Olson\, a marine biologist (Harvard) turned filmmaker (University of Southern California)\, also wrote the new book \"Don't Be Such a Scientist\: Talking Substance in an Age of Style.\" After the Q&A\, he will do a book signing in The Loft's lobby. The film runs 85 minutes and is not rated.
