The UA and Tucson community is invited to learn how vision works and how to keep eyes healthy during the science café on Tuesday.

Did you know that living in Arizona might increase your risk of suffering from vision deterioration? For example, dry eyes syndrome, a syndrome that results in a stinging or burning of the eye, or pain and redness of the eye is a common Arizona eye ailment.

Another vision deteriorating ailment, cataracts, may be developing when symptoms such as seeing faded colors or having cloudy or blurry vision appear. Another symptom commonly associated with keratoconus also found commonly in Arizona results in vision deterioration and results in contact lenses or glasses no longer working as well as they did before.

Flandrau: The UA Science Center will hold its next "Science Café" at Cushing Street Bar & Restaurant in downtown Tucson on Tues., Dec. 9 at 6 p.m. and invite the public to join in the discussion of "Vision and the Gift of Sight - Latest Advances in Improving Your Vision."

Dr. Roxana Ursea assistant professor of Ophthalmology, director of the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Division in the Department of Ophthalmology at The University of Arizona will present the short talk entitled "Vision and the Gift of Sight - Latest Advances in Improving Your Vision."

The UA and Tucson community are invited to learn how vision works and how to keep eyes healthy during the science café. A science café is a casual forum for people to meet and discuss a particular science topic with a UA scientist in the relaxed atmosphere of a local restaurant. Topics of discussion will vary each month, but each one will be current, relevant, and perhaps even slightly edgy and humorous, or controversial.

Dr. Ursea will share her insights as the chairman of the American Society of Ophthalmic Ultrasound and immediate past chairman of the Ophthalmic Ultrasound section of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. She is also a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, Ophthalmic Women Leaders and the Cornea Society.

Her clinical interests include ocular surface disorders and keratoconus, laser vision correction and challenging uveitis cases. Dr. Ursea's research interests are strongly correlated to her desire to offer her patients the best of care. She is among those rare persons who sought to provide the highest standards of care while still maintaining an interest in research. Her expertise in ocular imaging using high frequency ultrasound lead to a series of projects looking at the role of this technique in the diagnosis and management of various ocular disorders.

Cushing Street Bar & Restaurant is located on the corner of Cushing Street & Meyer Avenue in Downtown Tucson, across the street from the Convention Center. Complimentary, lighted, on-site parking is available on the east side of the restaurant.
