UA Squad Selected for National Cheerleading Show
The results will be shown on the MTV network.
The University of Arizona cheerleading squad competed against four other teams in the "Rah! Paula Abdul's Cheerleading Bowl" in partnership with MTV communications.
MTV joined with pop icon and former Los Angeles Laker Girl Paula Abdul to take viewers inside the intense world of competitive cheerleading. The results of the competition first aired on Jan. 3 on the MTV network and will be broadcast again on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at 2:30 p.m. Mountain time.
The University of Arizona, the University of Hawaii, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, the University of Montana and the University of Miami at Ohio were selected by Abdul from a national pool for the competition.
The winner will be featured in American Cheerleader Magazine and earn a trip for their squad to attend MTV's Spring Break 2009.
"Rah! is a project a lifetime in the making. I wanted to share one of my greatest passions, in a unique and special format that celebrates the true spirit, creativity and athleticism that is cheerleading," Abdul said in a statement released by MTV.
The teams traveled to New York to compete in November and were judged by the strength of their routines, athleticism and creativity. Cheerleaders may not discuss the results of the competition until after the program airs.
"They worked really hard leading up to the Rah! program and I know they had a lot of fun with Paula and the rest of the teams that participated. I was really excited that we had the opportunity to represent the Pac-10 and The University of Arizona," said Phoebe Chalk, UA assistant athletics director of community relations and special events.
Rah! judges include Abdul and Hi-Hat, choreographer for the movies "Bring It On" and "Step Up 2: The Streets," Scott Bouchard, head coach of the cheerleading squad at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, and New Jersey Nets dancer Brenna Klinger.
