Irène Assiba d’Almeida, head of the UA department of French and Italian, reads from her anthology just published by the University of Virginia Press, "A Rain of Words: A Bilingual Anthology of Women's Poetry in Francophone Africa."
With works by 47 poets from a dozen countries, the anthology is the first comprehensive survey of poetry by African women writing in French. Some are established writers; others are only beginning to publish their work. Almost none have been published outside of Africa or Europe or been previously translated into English. The book includes d’Almeida’s introduction, which places the poems in the context of recent African history.
The program, hosted by Alliance Française Tucson, includes refreshments.
