The University of Arizona Archive Ensemble, under the direction of Keith Pawlak, presents "A Tribute to Paul Horn." The concert will showcase the music of one of the most legendary world musicians and flutists, Paul Horn. During the evening, a variety of groundbreaking jazz works will be performed from archival manuscripts housed at the UA School of Music. Soloists will appear on flute, alto saxophone and clarinet. The evening will culminate with a choral performance conducted by guest artist Ralph Carmichael.
The concert will focus on Horn's early years in Hollywood – a time spent as a leader and sideman in the major recording studios with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. Groundbreaking jazz works will be presented through multiple styles and instrumentation. The musician's lifetime musical odyssey will be highlighted in pieces influenced by his friendship with Miles Davis and in other works that illustrate a broad understanding of the classical masters.
