UA Journalism Major to Take Asian Study Trip
Candace Begody
Candace Begody is one of nine students nationally who will learn about international affairs during a visit to Japan and South Korea
A University of Arizona student is one of nine students from across the country selected for a 13-day journalism study trip to Japan and South Korea.
The trip is part of the annual Roy W. Howard National Collegiate Reporting Competition. The event is sponsored by the Scripps Howard Foundation.
Candace Begody, a journalism major who has a minor in American Indian studies, leaves for the all-expenses-paid trip to Asia June 13.
The goal of the trip, according to an announcement by the Scripps Howard Foundation, is to give student journalists a better understanding of international affairs, particularly in Asia, where few American students choose to study.
The trip will be led by Bradley J. Hamm, dean of the journalism school at Indiana University.
The nine winners, whose entries collectively represent print and broadcast journalism and multimedia studies, were chosen for the quality of their work and an essay about their interest in international affairs.
Begody, who is Navajo, founded the UA chapter of the Native American Journalists Association in December 2007. It was, at the time, only the second NAJA chapter in the nation.
A year later she accomplished one of the organization's goals: publishing a journal on news and issues of interest to Native Americans. Begody is planning a second issue of "Native Perspectives" for publication this spring.
