The Eighth Annual Women's Mental Health Symposium is scheduled for Saturday, April 18, 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The University of Arizona Student Union Memorial Center Grand Ballroom, 1303 E. University Blvd.

This annual conference provides education about women's mental health and women's wellness topics. The goals of the Annual Women's Mental Health Symposium are to:

    * Improve the detection of mental illness in women.
    * Provide public education about mental health issues for women.
    * Provide clinical care information that is specific to the needs of women.

To honor the women of Tucson, individuals and groups are encouraged to drop off canned foods and donations to the Community Food Bank station at the Women's Mental Health Symposium.

This year more than ever, financial issues burden women, who usually are the primary care givers to children and often to entire multi-generational families.

Depression and anxiety disorders are more common in women than men, and the courses of psychiatric disorders often differ in women and men.

Women are more likely than men to seek integrative medicine treatment options for mental health indications, and health care providers and the public need appropriate education regarding the safety and efficacy of treatment modalities that are considered complementary and alternative medicine.

Topics to be addressed at this year's symposium include depression, bipolar disorder, sleep disorders, trauma and stress, eating disorders, dementia and complementary and alternative medicine.

More information about the conference, registration and cost can be found at the UA department of psychiatry Web site.

Parking is available in the Second Street Parking Garage, on the southeast corner of Mountain Avenue and Second Street.
