Dr. John LaWall, a neurologist with University Physicians Healthcare, has earned the subspecialty certification in headache medicine from the United Council on Neurological Subspecialties. Only about 400 physicians nationwide have received this certification.

LaWall directs the Headache Management Program at the Neurology Clinic located at UPH Hospital. He earned his medical degree in 1971 from The University of Arizona College of Medicine.

LaWall also is board certified in psychiatry, neurology and forensic psychiatry.

"Chronic headache is a serious condition for many people," said LaWall. "About 12 percent of the entire population suffers from migraines that have a crippling effect on their lives. So helping people avoid or minimize their pain is vitally important."

The UPH Headache Management Program is Southern Arizona's only program devoted to treating headache pain.

Patients gain the ability to overcome headache pain through the help of neurologists and other specialists including physical therapists, pharmacists and psychologists. Appointments can be obtained by calling 520-694-8888.

University Physicians Healthcare is a nonprofit corporation created in 1985 as the medical practice of the physicians of the UA College of Medicine.

Together, UPH, the UA, University Physicians Hospital and University Medical Center combine to care for patients, educate medical students, train young physicians and conduct clinical research. With more than 350 physicians and 1,500 staff, UPH is Arizona's largest physicians group.
