UA is 24th in the Nation in Awarding Bachelor Degrees to Hispanics

Each year, the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education releases a list of the top 100 colleges and universities to award degrees to Hispanics.
The University of Arizona is 24th in the nation in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics, according to Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education's Top 100 Colleges for Hispanics.
The University also ranked 62nd in awarding master's degrees to Hispanics.
Each year, the magazine releases a list of the top 100 colleges and universities that award degrees to Hispanics. Several factors help determine the rankings, including the total number of degrees that each school awarded to Hispanics as well as the percentage of those that went to Hispanics.
In the 2008 edition, the UA ranked 22nd in the nation in bachelor's degrees awarded to Hispanics and ranked 25th in Hispanic enrollment, a category not included in this year's edition. Last year the UA also ranked 62nd in awarding master's degrees and 20th in awarding doctoral degrees to Hispanics.
In determining the rankings, Hispanic Outlook used data collected from the U.S. Department of Education's Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System between July 1, 2007 and June 30, 2008.
The UA also made the magazine's lists for awarding bachelor's degrees to Hispanics in two academic fields:
- Biological and Biomedical Sciences -- No. 9
- Hispanic Studies -- No. 8
The UA actively works to recruit and retain prospective first-generation college students from underserved communities.
"We are committed to the development of diversity inclusion programming, counselor education, high school visitation programs, early outreach and community involvement. We want to serve our Hispanic students and make them feel connected to their UA Familia," said Catalina Carlos, an equity, access and inclusion advisor in the UA Office of Admissions.
