UA President Lauds Gov. Brewer's Actions To Secure Stimulus Funds To Help Keep Tuition Low

UA President Robert N. Shelton lauded Gov. Jan Brewer's action to secure federal stimulus funds for Arizona's universities.

University of Arizona President Robert N. Shelton on Friday lauded Gov. Jan Brewer's action to secure federal stimulus funds for Arizona's universities as a major step toward preserving essential university quality while keeping tuition as low as possible.  "We are very grateful for Governor Brewer's continued efforts to maintain affordable, quality higher education for the people of Arizona," Shelton said in a written statement.

"Without her application to secure federal stimulus funds, our tuition surcharge would have been even higher for the coming year. The federal stimulus funds will keep the UA affordable, mitigate tuition increases, and allow us to continue offering an education that has integrity and value to our students.

"The economic crisis that has gripped Arizona over the past year is without precedent, and the Governor's commitment to higher education during this extraordinarily difficult time is critical to the state's future, and most appreciated."

Brewer announced on Friday she had officially filed the necessary paperwork to secure federal stimulus dollars that would help Arizona's public universities defray budget cuts forced by current economic conditions.
