UA Launches Program for Non-Contracted Teachers
UA College of Education Dean Ronald W. Marx says a new program launched by his college will help non-contracted teachers gain and retain the skills they need for full-time hire.
The UA professional development program is specifically for educators whose careers have taken a detour due to the economy.
Tucson-area teachers without teaching contracts? The University of Arizona has a program for that.
The UA College of Education has launched its Career and Academic Support for Teachers, or CAST, Production program to provide professional development to non-contracted educators.
The program is free and open to unemployed teachers and those serving as substitutes and teaching assistants.
"Our concern is that teachers who do not have contracts may leave the profession or the Tucson area," said Ronald W. Marx, the College of Education dean.
"We cannot afford to lose the energy and skills of these talented educators," Marx said.
The first class meeting will be held on Aug. 24, from 4 to 6 p.m. in Room 102 of the UA's Vine Street Building, 1125 N. Vine St. Registration is currently open.
The program is designed to aid teachers in keeping their skills current while also teaching them new skills and providing them with networking opportunities where they can connect with educators locally and throughout the region.
Current trends in curriculum design, teaching methods and classroom management are among the other topics that will be covered during the program.
The program is administered by UA LINKS, a training team committed to providing professional development that supports Tucson educators in their efforts to improve learning for all children through partnerships with the UA, local schools and districts.
"One of the main goals for putting this group togther was to keep these talented teachers in the area," said Maryann Judkins, a UA College of Education instructional specialist coordinator and a member of UA LINKS.
"When the economy picks up and schools are able to have the number of teachers they need, we want to have a rich pool we can draw from," Judkins said.
"And if there are people who are not currently teaching, we want to make sure they keep their hands on what's going on and also the latest research."
Teachers can register by contacting Maryann Judkins at 520-626-1615 or mjudkins@email.arizona.edu.
