UA School of Music Announces 2009-2010 Concert Series

The University of Arizona School of Music is about to begin its 2009-2010 concert season, which annually offers hundreds of concerts, recitals and master classes, as well as an array of conferences and workshops. 

The season offers inspiring performances by its world-renowned faculty artists, and also includes celebrated musicians as well as guest artists who will perform throughout the year.

Many of the events are free of charge or are offered at an affordable price in an effort to make the tradition of musical excellence accessible to music enthusiasts and novices alike.

Join in the experience and feel the energy that gifted students and outstanding faculty and guest artists bring to the concert stage.

The season begins in September with performances by the following artists:

Nu-Jazz with Sylvan Street: Sept. 10, 7:30 p.m., Centennial Hall.

Tickets: $9, $7 and $5.

Summit Records recording artists Sylvan Street return to the UA campus in a special concert event celebrating the release of their debut CD "The Perfect Leaf." The progressive nu-jazz ensemble, led by UA Professor of Music Jay Rees, perform all-original works fusing jazz, rock, Latin and funk styles.

Sylvan Street includes the following UA faculty and guest artists:

Bach and Cassadó Solo Cello Suites and Dvořák's "Dumky" Trio: Sept. 16, 7 p.m., Holsclaw Hall.

Featuring the following faculty artists:

  • Mark Votapek, cello
  • Mark Rush, violin
  • Tannis Gibson, piano

Beethoven's "Kreutzer" and Torke's "Rapture": Sept. 21, 7:30 p.m., Crowder Hall.

Tickets: $5.

Featuring the following faculty artists:

  • Norman Weinberg, percussion
  • Michael Dauphinais, piano

UA Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony: Sept. 24, 7:30 p.m., Crowder Hall.

Tickets: $5.

Arizona Symphony Orchestra: Sept. 26, 7:30 p.m., Crowder Hall

Tickets: $5

Roy A. Johnson Memorial Organ Series: Sept. 27, 2:30 p.m., Holsclaw Hall.

Tickets: $9, 7, 5.

Organist Gail Archer is the guest artist. The concert will be followed by a reception hosted by the American Guild of Organists southern Arizona chapter.

Graduate Choral Conductors Recital: Sept. 27, 7:30 p.m., Crowder Hall.

TIckets: Free

Featuring the following faculty artists:

  • Brian Luce, flute
  • Carrol McLaughlin, harp

Featuring music from their upcoming album "Allume"

Works by C.P.E. Bach, Jacques Bondon, Howard Buss, Gabriel Fauré, Niccoló Paganini, Lowell Liebermann and others: Sept. 29, 7:30 p.m., Crowder Hall.

Tickets: $5.

The concert is followed by a reception hosted by Friends of the School of Music.

    The UA School of Music Building and the Fine Arts Box Office are located in the UA Fine Arts Complex (southeast corner of Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard).

     

    Parking is available at the Park Avenue Garage, on the northeast corner of Park Avenue and Speedway Boulevard.

     

    Most concerts take place at Crowder and Holsclaw Halls, both located in the UA School of Music building.
