Diving Accident Claims UAPD Officer

Fifteen-year veteran Daniel Forchione died while scuba diving off the San Diego coast.

The University of Arizona is mourning the loss of one of its veteran police officers.

Daniel Forchione died Tuesday afternoon in a scuba diving accident in the Sunset Cliffs area off the coast of San Diego. He was 46.

Forchione was on vacation with his wife, who works as an officer with the Tucson Police Department, and their eight-month-old daughter.

Forchione had been at UAPD since 1994 and was assigned as a motor officer with the department's traffic unit. He also was UAPD's liaison to Maricopa Residence Hall.

UAPD spokesman Sgt. Juan Alvarez said the San Diego Police Department, TPD and UAPD are assisting the family.
