For several years, Shelton has delivered an annual State of the University address on the UA campus in Tucson, and this marks the first time the event takes place in Phoenix.

During his 2009 State of the University address, Shelton spoke about budget reductions the UA has and will continue to face while also speaking to ways in which the University community is acting in creative ways to counter economic concerns.

Shelton also noted ways in which the UA and its supporters have been especially creative, also spotlighting some of the institution's accomplishments.
