A First-Person Presentation of Juan Bautista de Anza, by Don Garate

You are invited to "Juan Bautista de Anza (1736-1788), A First-Person Presentation," by Don Garate, chief of interpretation and historian at Tumacácori National Historical Park.

Garate, author of numerous local history books, has performed his living history program in five states in the United States and in two states in Mexico. The subject of his presentation, Juan Bautista de Anza, was born in Mexico in 1736. He began his military career as a cavalry cadet and became adept at frontier warfare, fighting against a profusion of Southwestern tribes. He later led expeditions to establish Spanish colonies and proselytize indigenous peoples in California. In 1777, he became governor of New Mexico. Ten years later, he was appointed commander of the Presidio of Tucson, but died before he could take office.

This event is sponsored by the Arizona chapter of the Fulbright Association, the Arizona Council for the Humanities, and International Affairs at the University of Arizona.
