Don Garate, author of numerous local history books, has performed his living history presentation in five states in the United States and two states in Mexico. The subject of his presentation, Juan Bautista de Anza, was born in Mexico in 1736. He began his military career as a cavalry cadet and became adept at frontier warfare, fighting against a profusion of Southwestern tribes. He later led expeditions to establish Spanish colonies and proselytize indigenous peoples in California. In 1777, he became governor of New Mexico. Ten years later, Anza was appointed commander of the Presidio of Tucson, but died before he could take office.
