The funding will enable the center to continue serving as a regional and national resource for training graduate-level students to care for children with chronic pulmonary disorders.

The University of Arizona Pediatric Pulmonary Center has been awarded a five-year, $1.7 million grant by the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration.

The award will enable the center to continue serving as a regional and national resource for training and educating graduate-level students to care for children with chronic pulmonary disorders within the disciplines of medicine, nursing, nutrition, social work and respiratory therapy.

The UA Pediatric Pulmonary Center is one of only six such centers funded in the U.S.

"Our training is family centered, culturally competent, interdisciplinary and provides state-of-the-art clinical care for children with chronic respiratory disorders," said Dr. Mark Brown, a professor of clinical pediatrics with the UA department of pediatrics.

"Our training is provided through lectures within the department and the College of Medicine, and we provide practical clinical experience through the UPH Pediatric Pulmonology Clinics," he said.

The pulmonary center has been continuously funded since 2000, training more than 350 health-care providers and helping more than 7,500 children with pulmonary problems.

The UA College of Medicine, University Physicians Healthcare and University Medical Center work together to care for patients, educate medical students, train resident-physicians and conduct clinical and basic research.

The UA Steele Children's Research Center and UMC have worked together to build Diamond Children's Medical Center. Diamond Children's plans to hold a grand opening in September, when the lobby is scheduled for completion.
