Talk - 'Behind the Emergency Response to the Giffords Shooting'

At 10:10 a.m. Jan. 8, a gunman fired into a small crowd gathered outside Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' "Congress on Your Corner" event. At 10:12 a.m., the first call was placed to emergency services. At 10:15 a.m., the police arrived followed by the paramedics at 10:16 a.m. Injured victims were mostly taken to the University of Arizona Medical Center. What happened inside the hospital? How did the staff work together to handle the medical crisis? How did they face the pressure of national attention and the visits from important political figures? Learn all this and more at our Medical Heroism event – see and hear about how teamwork in the health field can help stabilize an urgent situation.

Speakers include a firefighter present at the shooting scene, the trauma surgeon responsible for the victims brought to UAMC, the director of communication who managed all the media attention at UAMC, the director of trauma who helped build and manage the trauma program and the chief medical officer of UAMC who provides medical and administrative oversight of the medical center.
