Photography exhibition: "The Raw and the Cooked"

The American Mathematical Society and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics have awarded their 2000 AMS-SIAM Norbert Wiener Prize to UA Regents' Professor Arthur T. Winfree. The award is one of the highest distinctions given in applied mathematics.

Winfree, who is on the faculty of the ecology and evolutionary biology department, studies coupled nonlinear oscillations, generally known as biological rhythms. His work has touched a wide array of research, including heart rhythms and arrhythmia, and circadian rhythms, or sleep patterns.

"At every stage of his career, Winfree has looked deeply into a physical, chemical or biological phenomenon and managed to extract a mathematical gem," said a press release from the American Mathematical Society. The 30,000-member AMS began in 1888 to foster mathematical research and scholarship.
