Sunday, March 29, 2009
Friday 1 p.m. - 4:45 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.- 6 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The Department of Linguistics at The University of Arizona is proud to announce a special weeklong conference and mini-course, funded by the National Science Foundation.

The conference and course will focus on modern theoretical approaches to the Celtic languages, with an emphasis on the following questions:

  • How does data from the Celtic languages, with its unique typological properties, inform formal theories of grammar? What challenges does this data pose to current understanding and how should theories of grammar be modified to deal with the data from Celtic languages?
  • How do current advances in formal theories improve our understanding of the grammar of Celtic languages?
  • How can formal theoretical linguistics inform the documentation of the endangered Celtic languages?

Invited speakers include: David Adger (QMUL), Anna Bosch (UKy), SJ Hannahs (Newcastle), Randall Hendrick (UNC), Mélanie Jouitteau (Paris 7), James McCloskey (UCSC), Máire Ní Chiosain (UCD), Maggie Tallerman (Newcastle), Gillian Ramchand (Tromsø), Maire Noonan (McGill).

Note: The conference will be prefaced by an optional four-day mini-course (LING 484/584) designed to jumpstart student interest and research in Celtic linguistics. Both graduates and undergraduates are invited to attend! (See Web site for details.)
