The University of Arizona and Arizona Student Unions recognized campus members for their outstanding achievements and contributions to The University of Arizona for the past twelve months.
UA President Robert N. Shelton presented certificates of honor to nine individuals and three teams and organizations for their outstanding achievements on behalf of the UA.
The USS Arizona bell rang once to commemorate the day, which included a reception at the Student Union Memorial Center to celebrate the nominees. The Student Union Advisory Council selected the individuals, teams and organizations to be honored.
The honorees are:
Organizations that were honored include Phi Alpha Delta, University College, the Phoenix Mars Mission, the Department of Planetary Sciences and the Lunar and Planetary Laboratory.
Nominations of faculty, students, staff, and alumni are submitted monthly in recognition of achievements during the previous 30 days that bring prestige and recognition to both the nominee and the University.
The USS Arizona ship's bell is tolled at the Student Union Memorial Center seven times each month at 12:07 p.m. and is a symbol of the battleship's sinking at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.
The USS Arizona ship's bell has held a place of prominence at the UA for more than 50 years and its bells is run only on significant occasions in the life of the University.
