Dean of UA Libraries Carla J. Stoffle Named Arizona Librarian of the Year

By University Communications November 7, 2000

Citing Carla Stoffle's work with the University of Arizona's School of Information Resources and Library Sciences, the Arizona Library Association selected Stoffle Arizona Librarian of Year for 2000-2001.

She has served as acting director of the School of Information Resources and Library Sciences since August 1999. The UA School of Information Resources and Library Sciences is the only school in the Southwest that prepares students to be librarians and information specialists.

Stoffle is dean of libraries and the Center for Creative Photography at the UA.

As acting director of the School of Information Resources and Library Sciences, Stoffle addressed faculty and budget issues that threatened its accreditation. She is credited with hiring talented staff, securing statewide and university commitment for additional funding to regain the continued support of the American Library Association's Committee of Accreditation. The Committee withdrew its petition to have the School's accreditation removed.

Agnes Griffen, director of the Tucson Pima Public Library says "If Carla Stoffle had not intervened, there would be no graduate library education program available on site to our employees as well as to aspiring librarians in nearby states." Griffen, along with GladysAnn Wells, Arizona State Librarian, nominated Stoffle for the award.
