UA's Center for Creative Photography Acquires Jack Welpott's Archive

The UA's Center for Creative Photography has acquired the archive of Jack Welpott, an internationally known photographer. Welpott's work may be found at some of the world's most important collections, such as the Getty Museum in Los Angeles and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, France.

The work of UA software engineer Greg Gasson was broadcast to a nationwide audience during Super Bowl on Feb. 5. Gasson, who works at the UA's Steward Observatory, was the aerial director of photography for a Chevy Sonic commercial that aired on KVOA-Channel 4.

UA Museum Shows Off Arizona's Best Minerals

"100 Years of Arizona's Best: The Minerals That Made the State," an exhibition that opens Feb. 4 at the UA Mineral Museum, will showcase hundreds of gems and minerals. Some, such as a silver ore specimen that's about the size of a quarter, were unearthed decades before Arizona became a state.

Conservatory Trains Next Generation of Guitarists

For students of classical guitar, Tucson is the place to be. Young would-be guitarists come to southern Arizona to attend the UA's Bolton Guitar Studies Program from as far as Brazil, France and the Philippines. The program was founded in 1974, and Tom Patterson has been its director since 1980.
